People talk about replacing engineers with AI — what about engineering managers? Managers identify anti-patterns (e.g., not reaching out for help soon enough), provide coaching, and track progress. This seems easier to do with AI than building software itself. Of course, AI can’t deal with politics or human problems like lack of motivation. But, it could do a lot of the job, especially for junior-to-mid-level engineers who face similar issues.
Spot on! Tools like AI can augment engineers, but the creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills of humans remain irreplaceable. It's about collaboration, not replacement.
AI could indeed become an important tool for managers, especially when it comes to routine tasks like tracking progress and identifying recurring issues. Of course, it won't replace a manager's ability to work with people and solve more complex problems, but for junior engineers, AI could be an excellent tool for mentoring and development.
AI could assist managers, but it can't replace the empathy and nuance required for human challenges
Well if yall stop bouncing my resumes, you would have a "not so bad" engineer on your team.

3moGiven that human challenges are far more complex and far less objective and logical, I'm inclined to think AI will be better at coding than actual leadership. What passes for management, the stuff of Dilbert for example, sure, but that's mostly useless or harmful anyway. With more AI we need more human skills and focus.
