My Journey - 002 I planned a trip to Vancouver this past summer to visit my girlfriend. Since the Alpha Chromatica program is online, I figured I could study while traveling. But, as often happens, things didn’t go exactly as planned. Just days before my flight, I received a job offer to work as a freelancer on a movie—a one-and-a-half-month contract for my very first film project. Balancing work and study isn't uncommon, and I knew it was manageable for a short period. Here are my three key takeaways from this experience: 🗣️ Communication is Key It's crucial to fully understand the notes given to you. If something is unclear, don’t guess—ask. The sooner, the better; time is always ticking. Be clear and specific in your communication; no one is a mind reader. ⏱️ Time Management is Essential Learning to manage your time often means becoming comfortable with saying "no" and prioritizing tasks. This is a vital skill if you want to stay productive. It also includes planning for downtime and relaxation. Don’t underestimate the importance of sleep—a well-rested mind functions far better. 📝 Take Notes Don’t rely on memory alone—write things down. I like to confirm my understanding of my supervisor’s notes by giving a verbal recap of what the shot needs. I’ve envisioned working in film since the day I started my career in VFX, but the industry was in decline when I graduated with my Bachelor's in Digital Arts. #careertip Tuesday So, you want to be an Art Director? Tip No.18 - There are more ways than one to skin a cat I was watching my wife making crepes the other day. Our son's opinion on who makes them best in our household changes every now and then so yeah, you’ve guessed it right - we’re competing ;) The differences in how we make them are significant but it’s not about the ingredients - it’s much more about the process. While i hate having dirty dishes and cutlery scattered around me and i’m sure washing the batter bowl before the last crepe is off the pan (duh!), she thrives in chaos and keeps creating her crepes in the middle of a tornado. The outcome is fantastic though so why would i care? The thing is - there’s no such thing as one, single, perfect way of doing things. If there was, all of us would simply follow the recipe and have a guarantee of success (boooring!). Making games is different from making crepes but the above rule applies. Every studio has its own ways of doing things so switching between studios implies learning how your new colleagues work. At the same time, i will bet you, every pipeline can be better so there’s always room for improvement and your input. Be open to learn new things but, also, don’t be afraid if you don’t know something. You can try and learn, fail and move on if necessary, until you’ve got this. We, humans, have an enormous potential to learn. Unknown might seem scary but focus on that pot of gold at the end of the path.

🚨Young people know nothing about careers in the creative industries🚨 So why don’t companies do more to teach them? —------------ On the ERIC app we have tonnes of articles from creative organisations, trying to teach young people about the roles available in their industry. But not enough companies have realised how important this is yet. Young people often aren’t even taught about the basics of the creative industries, so how are they supposed to know about specific career paths or entry level roles? Creating resources that ensure young people have access to even the most base level information goes a long way towards helping them find their place in the creative sector. Each helps Gen Z learn more about their creative options and position themselves to jump on the career ladder.

Chroma 0313 - In Which You Might Be Better Off Going to School to Study VFX - Part 10 Industry Connections: The Bridge to Career Success In the world of visual effects, your skills and talent are only part of the equation. The other part? It’s who you know. That’s where being part of a school with a solid reputation really pays off. Schools with proven track records open doors to industry events, workshops, and job fairs that are difficult to access on your own. These aren’t just events; they’re opportunities - goldmines of connections. You’ll meet fellow students who will become your future colleagues, supervisors who’ll remember your name, and recruiters actively searching for their next hire. Here’s the truth: sending out your resume blindly isn’t going to cut it. Even an outstanding demo reel can get buried in the crowd. What really gets you in the door is a recommendation, a direct connection, someone who’s willing to vouch for you. A good VFX program doesn’t just teach you software; it builds your professional network. It introduces you to the people who can give your career a boost when it matters most. And it doesn’t stop at your first job. Networking is a long game. You’ll find that those connections grow and evolve with your career. The compositor you studied with could easily become your ticket to your next gig. The recruiter who saw potential in your reel might call you six months later with an offer you didn’t expect. VFX is a fast-moving industry where studios constantly seek talent who can hit the ground running. Think of it this way: learning on your own has its place, but if you’re serious about breaking into the industry, you’ll get there faster with the right connections. Those connections are the difference between wandering aimlessly and finding your path. A good VFX school lays the groundwork so that when the opportunity comes knocking, you’re ready. Don’t waste time trying to figure it all out on your own. Join a program that’s already paved the way. The chance to turn your dream into reality is right in front of you. Will you take it? #careertip Tuesday So, you want to be an Art Director? Tip No.20 - Find a project that you love (and thank me later) Have you ever noticed how quickly you mastered recognizing car brands/ learned the lore of your favorite fantasy saga/ got to know all the possible types of ships in the game you’ve spent already hundreds of hours in? Yeah, it’s because you are *into it*. That’s fine, this is how our brains work and this is transferable to how you should think about your work as well. As stated before there are many ways of doing exactly the same thing. Some of the ways are considered ‘optimal’ to achieve the goal - like jogging/ running to lose weight for example. The thing is i find running boring as h*** and never even started doing it on a regular basis. This rule applies to work environment as i strongly believe that you would either be unable or (at least) struggle a lot to peak your creativity on a project that you don’t find interesting. It might be challenging sometimes (because of economical reasons for example) but i will encourage you to work only on the projects that you’re excited about. This way you will understand and learn it faster and working on it won’t really seem like ‘a job’, it will be lots of fun and you’ll get paid for it on top of everything else. Don’t waste your time on lukewarm projects that you’re not really interested in as a player AND/ OR creator.
