Earlier last month, over 30 #ULIItaly Young Leaders from companies such as Hines, BNP Paribas, and Lendlease visited #SeiMilano, a smart district developed by Borio Mangiarotti S.p.A. Nicholas Gerritsen, Project Innovation Designer at Planet Smart City and a #ULIYoungLeader led the tour, providing an overview of Planet’s #smartspaces and solutions. “The visit highlighted how we have seamlessly integrated high standards of #sustainablebuilding practices with #communitydevelopment initiatives aimed at #empowering residents,” explained Gerritsen. SeiMilano features #ClassA buildings with low CO2 emissions, advanced #digitalconnectivity, and #smarthome systems that simplify daily living while promoting sustainability. Residents also benefit from the #PlanetApp, offering event booking, space reservation, and utility monitoring services. The visit showcased how Planet combines #smarttechnology and sustainability to create future-ready neighbourhoods with lasting value.

An EU-funded project has been established to preserve cultural heritage artefacts and reduce energy demand by up to 50% by improving indoor air quality. The Horizon Europe project SIMIACCI (Sustainable Intelligent Management of Indoor Air Quality for the Culture and Creative Industries) aims to revolutionise indoor air quality management in galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs) by implementing innovative solutions that significantly reduce energy consumption. The regeneration of railway stations is a decisive driver of growth and sustainability for many cities in Europe. In the first article written for Portico as Expert of the European Urban Initiative project S4T-Station for Transformation I explore the main challenges that Rovereto and other cities in Italy are tackling for reviving railways stations' spaces as hubs for civic engagement and education to sustainability. The Italian alpine city is implementing the principles of the New European Bauhaus in the regeneration of the station and the creation of new services. Building upon the experience carried out by La Foresta and with the active involvement of civic groups which are collaborating with the local authority, the S4T project is fostering the creation of a sustainable canteen, but is also hosting innovators' and artists' residencies and creating new functions for the residents of the valley. An Afternoon Break in #Ioannina: A Living Example of Sustainable Mobility in Action 🇬🇷 While exploring the charming city of Ioannina, we experienced firsthand how pedestrian-friendly spaces and thoughtful urban design can transform daily life. Strolling through cobblestone streets, pedestrianised zones, and picturesque pathways surrounding historic landmarks reminded us of the vital role sustainable mobility plays—not only in reducing emissions 🌍 but in enriching the human experience. Between workshops on our project pilots and stakeholder engagement to drive climate-neutral European cities through innovative smart mobility solutions, we explored Ioannina’s rich heritage. Highlights included the Citadel, Greece’s oldest castle, the Byzantine Museum, and the Silversmithing Museum, all set against the serene backdrop of Lake Pamvotis and the Pindus Mountains ⛰️.
