July 4th is tomorrow, and if you plan to celebrate with fireworks at home, it’s incredibly important to remember to wear protective eyewear to prevent injuries to your eyes. Last year there were nearly 10,000 injuries caused by fireworks, many of them eye-related. The safest thing to do is leave the fireworks to the professionals, but if you plan to set them off yourself, ALWAYS wear protective eyewear to avoid flying debris, falling objects, chemicals, and intense light and heat. Security Guard Safety: Stairwells and parking garages can act as Faraday Cages, blocking both cell and radio service. They are also the location where the possibility (probability?) of an unfavorable encounter increases. If communications go down, so does the guard's safety. 3D's 3 Takeaways 1. If you are going into a section where you may lose cell and radio service, notify dispatch that you are on patrol and your expected time of completion. They should be prepared to follow up. 2. Exercise caution when entering stairwells or turning blind corners. 3. Walk down the center of the garage so that you have room to react if there is anyone hiding. Although it may be a "boomer" thing to say, ear buds should NEVER be worn on patrol. We think that having them on shift has greatly undermined the confidence in private security guards.
