Picture this: It's 8AM on a Monday. Dr. Smith stumbles into his office, already exhausted. His grueling to-do list is carried over from last week's unfinished tasks yet his day is packed tighter than a subway car at rush hour. Across town, Dr. Jones strolls in and grins, sipping her coffee. She's excited about the day ahead, which is sure to be filled with meaningful patient interactions. The kicker? They're both primary care physicians. In 2024. How can two doctors in the same field have such different experiences? Why do some PCPs report that "there's never been a better time to be a primary care doctor" - yet almost 40% report feeling at least one dimension of burnout? It turns out that being a PCP today is a bit like living in a Charles Dickens novel - it is the best of times *and* the worst of times. Quite the paradox. But, there's a hero in this story that is transforming the lives of both PCPs and their patients. Check out our latest blog post, written by Mirah's Hugh Barrigan, to discover: ➡ Why it's tougher than ever to be a PCP ➡ Why some PCPs are excited for the future of the profession ➡ The secret weapon that's making things easier for some PCPs, like our Dr. Jones here (spoiler: it's not a magic wand) https://lnkd.in/efVP--Nh #PrimaryCare #IntegratedBH #CollaborativeCare

A recent Medical Economics® report revealed that 92% of physicians experience burnout during their careers, with 62% currently feeling its effects. Burnout, defined by the AMA as emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal achievement, stems from factors like long work hours, administrative burdens, and misalignment between individual and organizational values. Interestingly, addressing Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) within value-based care models may help alleviate provider burnout. By considering patients' social risks, such as lack of transportation or access to healthy food, healthcare providers can improve outcomes, reduce patient frustrations, and enhance patient-provider relationships. This holistic approach not only benefits patients but can also decrease stress for clinicians. To support this, integrating social workers, using technology to screen for SDOH, and streamlining administrative tasks can ease the burden on healthcare providers, leading to a healthier workforce and better care. #ProviderBurnout #SDOH #ValueBasedCare #HealthcareInnovation #HealthEquity #PatientCare #HealthcareLeadership https://lnkd.in/gnhXDWhy

Physician burnout is at its lowest level since the pandemic as 48.2% of physicians claimed to have at least one burnout symptom in 2023. Yet, burnout is still a very pricy problem for Americans. It costs us on a conservative base-case level nearly $4.6 billion a year from physician burnout alone. The American Medical Association estimates it costs a facility as much as $1 million depending on the doctor’s specialty. Healthtech companies like Ribbon Health and Health Note are leveraging tech and AI to reduce physician burnout! I recommend reading this Morning Brew article on the topic and the AMA study to learn more! #healthcare #healthtech

This post is not intended to get sympathy for physicians, rather my attempt to inform the public on the reason doctor burnout has become so prevalent I've had countless discussions with physicians from diverse backgrounds—those in major health systems, and private care doctors alike. In my opinion, there are really three major factors contributing to physician burnout that we urgently need to address. Firstly, the lack of control is profoundly demoralizing. After spending nearly half of our lives in rigorous study, the feeling that we no longer have a significant say in our practices is hard to accept. This loss of autonomy makes it difficult for physicians to find satisfaction in their work. Certainly within our company we have set up things in an extremely physician friendly way but this is so difficult to find in most practices. Secondly, the overwhelming number of mundane tasks that we face daily detracts from our core responsibilities. These tasks, while necessary, lead to task-switching that prevents us from entering the 'flow' states essential for high-quality work and personal satisfaction. Thirdly, inefficient processes pervade our work environments. Whether in clinics, hospitals, or surgery centers, these inefficiencies lead to unnecessarily long hours which harm our mental health and overall well-being. On top of these systemic issues, the emotional toll of dealing with very sick patients and their families adds another layer of stress. This combination not only leads to burnout but also to an unacceptably high rate of suicidal thoughts and even suicide among physicians. This message isn't about seeking sympathy but about raising awareness and finding solutions. We need to make systemic changes to ensure that physicians can focus on what's most important—caring for you and your families. Let's open a dialogue on how we can make these changes. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. Would love to hear your thoughts on this issue in the comments below 👇🏽 #Healthcare #MentalHealth #Physicians #Doctors #SpineSurgeron #people #Humanity #DrSinicropi

A recent Medical Economics report revealed a startling truth: over the course of their careers, 92% of doctors have experienced burnout, affecting not only physician well-being but also patient care. The root causes of provider burnout: 🔹Excessive workloads & administrative tasks 🔹Lack of leadership support 🔹Disconnect between personal and organizational values A potential solution? Addressing #SDOH. While it might seem like an extra burden, Spatially Health's CEO, Hillit Meidar-Alfi, PhD🎗️, offers a fresh perspective on how it can actually be a powerful tool to combat burnout. Here's why: ➡️ Improved Patient Outcomes = Less Provider Stress: By tackling SDOH factors like transportation and food access, we can empower patients to manage their health, leading to better clinical results and less provider frustration. ➡️ Streamlined Workflows & Technology: ACOs can utilize social workers, community health workers, and SDOH technology to free up provider time and reduce administrative burdens. ➡️ Investing in Providers = Investing in Patients: Supporting provider well-being creates a more sustainable healthcare system for everyone.
