Some VP Sales are hired to figure out how to SELL the thing. Some VP Sales are hired to figure out how to SCALE the thing. Some VP Sales are hired to figure out how to CREATE DEMAND for the thing. These are 3 very different jobs. They’re all hard and they overlap. But the last one is by far the hardest. And it comes with the most risk. Ideal scenario for first-time VP Sales is early stage responsibility figuring out how to sell the thing, then growing into scaling it. Ideal scenario for experienced VP Sales is responsibility for taking a small sales engine that works and making it scale in a profitable manner. Responsibility for creating demand is really never ideal unless you have a secret Rolodex that ensures your success. — For the Gen Z folks who are confused, Rolodex means Contact List for Boomers, you can Google it. In either regard, know what you’re signing up for because not all VP Sales roles are the same.

The biggest mistake with product-led sales: hiring a sales team too soon. In other words: 📞 Hire sales last Nothing is sweeter than hearing your customer say: “Hey, we love your product and would like to purchase it for the entire company." These people are commonly called “hand-raisers.” You must get back to them very fast. Since they show organic demand. And make sure you’ve a lot of them, before adding sales. Are we facing a hiring crisis in sales? Here’s my two cents: Sales used to be exciting, and it’s about time we bring that back. Being from Germany, no kid dreams of becoming a salesperson. In my youth it was either police officer or pilot, now YouTube superstar streamer. Now we sorta mumble to our parents or friends after landing a job, “I ended up in sales.” We’ve paid a high price for this perception. We forgot how awesome a sales career can be.
