I really enjoyed listening to this episode of Nonprofit Lowdown, featuring Christopher Beck, CAP®! The topic is one I particularly found interesting given his depth of fundraising experience. Christopher has indeed become one of the great industry connections I've made this year. Many thanks to the African American Development Officers (AADO) Network for making that possible. Its Men of Color in Development (MOCID) Affinity Group has been a GOD-send for me! It was great hearing about his journey as a Black male fundraising professional on the podcast. His conversation with Rhea Wong was more than helpful. I found it deeply motivating as someone new to focused work in major and planned giving. At one point, Rhea mentioned the growing diversity among high-net-worth individuals. I began to ponder what that looks like from the fundraiser's point of view. Most established best practices for major gift cultivation are based on philanthropic giving's overwhelmingly monolithic history. We clearly know philanthropists from underrepresented backgrounds often have a different relationship to money. Ideas and motivations behind giving also look differently for donors of color. Therefore, that means a broader view must now be considered. With a more diverse collective of major donors supporting nonprofits, it cannot be assumed that approaches which have traditionally worked will in the future. I'm certainly keen to see how the sector expands beyond current practices to embrace major donors with different worldviews. #fundraising #thoughtleadership #nonprofitlife #podcast #listennow #BIPOC #DEI #philanthropy #majorgiving

Need a boost of inspiration? Check out this conversation between Rhea Wong and Christopher Beck. There are so many great lessons in this podcast. -Christopher Beck, CAP®, I loved hearing you talk about the relationship between authenticity and confidence. -Rhea Wong, such an excellent reminder that fundraising at its best is not trying to get something, it's trying to give something: the opportunity to create the legacy you want to create. -Christopher Beck, CAP® also talked about all the changes happening in philanthropy right now, and my favorite advice was this: "Stick to the basics. The basics will never fail you." We should all put that on a post-it in our workspace and meditate on that every morning when we start our day.

"Think about a project you're trying to get funded. Initially, it might seem like it only benefits your organisation, and that can be a hurdle. But with a few tweaks, like expanding its impact to include the wider community, tackling broader issues, or folding in a few additional elements you can open up eligibility for grants you might have otherwise missed out on" Useful insights about how you can re-position elements of your project to improve your chances of getting funded and all things 'eligibility' in episode two of our 'Back to Basics' series - 'Understanding Eligibility' https://lnkd.in/g3kFqJsg
