Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink. Low carbon hydrogen will be necessary for the decarbonisation of some sectors like steel, ammonia, methanol production, and potentially some other use cases. Hydrogen is currently produced mainly from coal or gas, at a scale of 94Mt per year, and associated emissions of 900 Mt of CO2 (https://lnkd.in/e2wEJy-r). "Green" hydrogen, produced from the electrolysis of water is currently the leading candidate to supply the low carbon molecule. Obviously, this requires water. Globally this is not an issue as producing the 94Mt per year would need about 0.1% of total freshwater use (https://lnkd.in/ejyPxs4x). Locally this might be much more problematic since production is often envisaged in places with a lot of renewables potential but relatively arid. In this case, using seawater appears attractive. Either by using desalination or through direct use of seawater. The latter is actually quite complicate as seawater contains a lot of dissolves elements which make it difficult to design a durable process. On the other hand, desalination only adds of the order of 0.2% in terms of electricity consumption and hardly a few cents per kg to the price. Challenges for Green Hydrogen 1. Production cost coupled with large amount of fresh drinking quality water requirement. Every kg of green hydrogen produced uses nine litres of clean drinking quality water. 2. Production cost of Grey hydrogen i.e. USD1.5 -2.50 per Kg vis-a-vis production cot od Green Hydrogen at USD4-7 per Kg. 3. Emission of green house gases should not exceed 2 Kg carbon dioxide equivalent per kg of Hydrogen. 4. Ground realities and complexities involved in blending hydrogen in natural gas pipelines.
