At Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, innovation drives progress, and 2024 was a year of record-setting achievements. For the first time, VCU surpassed $500 million in sponsored research funding, marking the sixth consecutive year of growth and cementing our place as a leader in discovery and impact. Among the year’s highlights is Nerve Tape, a groundbreaking biologic wrap licensed by BioCircuit Technologies from the School of Medicine's Dr. Jonathan Isaacs. Already gaining traction at top U.S. medical centers including the Mayo Clinic, Nerve Tape is poised to become one of VCU’s most successful licensing ventures. Another example of innovation in action is the work of Dr. Richard Marconi, whose team is tackling tick-borne diseases with a revolutionary two-mechanism vaccine. This technology addresses critical global health challenges. We were also proud to honor Dr. Massimo Bertino as VCU's 2024 Billy R. Martin Innovator of the Year. His advancements in aerogel technology demonstrate how bold ideas and collaborative support from VCU TechTransfer and Ventures can translate into safer, more sustainable solutions for industry and society. These achievements represent just a fraction of the innovation happening at VCU, where research, collaboration and creativity will continue to shape 2025 and beyond. 🌟 Thrilled to Share My Experience at the Workshop on Bioprinting Applications! 🌟 On 10th & 11th December 2024, I had the privilege of actively participating in the Workshop on Bioprinting Applications, hosted at CSIR-IGIB, Delhi, in collaboration with the Society for Advanced Academic Excellence (SAAE). This event brought together brilliant minds from diverse fields, exploring cutting-edge advancements in bioprinting technology and its transformative potential across healthcare, research, and biotechnology. The workshop provided a unique platform to dive into the nuances of bioprinting, including its applications in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and drug discovery. The expert-led sessions, live demonstrations, and interactive discussions were truly enlightening and helped broaden my understanding of this rapidly evolving field. Connecting with fellow researchers, professionals, and innovators was another highlight of this event. The exchange of ideas and knowledge reaffirmed my passion for contributing to the advancement of science and innovation. A big thank you to the organizing teams of IGIB and SAAE for curating such an impactful event. I’m grateful to be part of this thriving scientific community, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in bioprinting and beyond. SIPP today released an in-depth report on the life sciences sectors in Greater Victoria, highlighting the region’s potential as an emerging hub for cutting-edge innovations and entrepreneurial growth. Greater Victoria’s Life Sciences Sector: An Assessment of Assets, Capabilities & Opportunities, commissioned by SIPP in collaboration with the District of Saanich, provides a comprehensive analysis of the region’s life sciences ecosystem, including strengths, challenges and opportunities for future development. Key findings from the report from Qatalyst Research Group Inc. include: – Greater Victoria is home to 60-plus life sciences companies, spanning diverse fields such as medical devices, biotech and digital health. – Infrastructure developments, including the Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technology (CAMTEC) at the University of Victoria (UVic), as well as planned wet lab facilities and innovation spaces, are enhancing the region’s capacity to support startups and emerging companies. – The proximity to high-quality post-secondary institutions provides access to cutting-edge research and skilled graduates, enabling the region’s life sciences companies to stay at the forefront of innovation. Is it true? Is everything bigger in Texas? I recently attended a MassChallenge event at Dallas’ Biotech+ Hub at Pegasus Park where they discussed the emerging trends, challenges and opportunities in the BioTech landscape. The collaboration of key players in the life sciences ecosystem across the state of Texas is impressive. I can only imagine how much the BioTech industry will grow in #Dallas over the next five to ten years. Government funded initiative like Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and Bioworks for North Texas have strengthened Texas’ position.
