This is a great concept and is much needed in many communities. During previous stages of my career, I’ve run outsourced estate management mandates for two major high street banking networks and been involved in consultancy projects for many of the others. When arriving at a bank branch to undertake a condition survey or rental valuation, the etiquette was that you wait your turn to be seen with everybody else. For this reason, in my time, I’ve stood in many 100s of customer queues in many 100s of bank branches in diverse locations all across the UK. One of the things that I learnt from this was just what an important a part of the local community these retail banks were. I would find local businesses owners with the day’s takings, young people opening their first account, couples buying a house, travellers changing their money, older people managing their pensions and much, much, more. One of the toughest aspects of advocacy can be communicating effectively about complex policy issues in a clear and succinct way. And by that I mean, taking a topic that could honestly take hours to explain even to a PhD but doing so in under five minutes. The average person isn’t and shouldn’t need to be in the weeds of every imaginable policy arena that could affect their daily lives. And yet we all, including policymakers, sometimes need to understand how a proposed policy could affect us in a very real way. Getting their attention, keeping it, and then ensuring they understand the "So what?" is the holy grail of policy advocacy in general, and a critical aspect of what we do at the medtech association in particular. I say that because our task of communicating the impact of a policy proposal gets even more difficult—and even more important—when lives are at stake. That has especially been the case for our industry and the literally billions of patients worldwide who depend on sterile medical technologies every time they enter a health care setting, as we work to ensure the regulations surrounding this process are truly science-driven (and not politically driven). I’m proud of our team for the hard work they put into taking a difficult scientific issue and in two minutes explaining the underlying science of ethylene oxide sterilization—and the essential role it plays in saving countless patients' lives: https://lnkd.in/dtUf7ZtZ
