As a Diversity & Inclusion specialist and Black woman, I've experienced firsthand the biases and barriers that exist in many spaces. The current US political climate has heightened these feelings of unease and marginalisation for many Black women. Let's recognise the emotional labour and burden that comes with navigating these challenges. I urge you to check in on your Black colleagues and friends, offer support, and create a safe space for open conversations. Together, we can foster a culture of inclusivity and empathy. Here at The Adecco Group UK & Ireland, our #Ethnicity forum continue to celebrate Black History Month. In their third Food for Thought Session today, Friday 20th October at 12:30pm, they discuss the topic of “Colourism”. They’ll explain what it means, why there is an underlying system of privilege and discrimination based on skin tone within members of the same ethnic group, how skin-tone bias can affect racial equality at work, and what we can do to create a cultural shift to change this. Black History Month 🖤 Todays article post features being an ally for black women in the work place. There is so many stereotypical viewpoints and unconscious bias that is formed in the workplace. Many employers request for training to be conducted upon approval of the job role for awareness purposes. This is to ensure that you make a conscious efforts to be aware of those from ethnic backgrounds. This article looks at how you can be a support system and become educated on how you can be a better employee. Wanna know how to create safe spaces for Black women? Here’s how 👇🏿 ⚫️ Create a culture of trust by affirming Black women and maintaining confidentiality. 🟤 Stop the tone policing, gaslighting, or labelling them as angry or difficult when they speak up. ⚪️ Do not tolerate micro-aggressions. Do not touch Black women’s hair without their permission. Do not assume they are the spokesperson for “all things Black”. ⚫️ Normalise introverted Black women. Being a team player shouldn’t require overhearing about your personal life. 🟤 Stop requiring Black women to look ‘professional’, a standard defined by white men which does not promote inclusivity.
