Passionate placemaker and marketer with expertise in destination branding, inward investment, visitor economy and developing sustainable partnerships. Head of the Destination Chesterfield Partnership
It is nice to receive a compliment. Last week after the Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Skills and Employability Conference one of the delegates complemented my presenting and interviewing at the event. It is funny how you develop skills and on reflection, little did I know it, but it all started as a shy young child. My Dad would compare fashion shows and still to this day hosts Matlock Bath Illuminations. I used to hate getting dragged up on stage being asked to present a prize or be involved in the entertainment. He also used to take me along to watch radio and TV interviews he would do in his role as a local councillor. I was still shy as a teenager but I got a job at the Heights of Abraham and was trained up to be a Cavern Guide. Standing up in front of 50 people, up to 8 times a day talking about lead mining and local history is a great way to learn how to present. If you can keep an August Bank Holiday crowd enthused you not going to go far wrong! Those two experiences plus continuing to put myself forward for presenting and media opportunities throughout my career have helped me develop my skills. I have failed along the way but always learned from those experiences. I am still more introverted than extroverted, and I can still improve and learn from others how to present and interview better. I also still get nervous like I did the first time I did that cave tour. The moral of this story is we can all be working with young people to give them opportunities to shape and develop future employment skills. The things they find uncomfortable at the time can prove to be a huge asset in later life, even if they don't know it! What skills did you develop from experiences when you were younger that have ended up being vital to your career today? #Skills #Employability
