An ecological experiment intends to restore the area around Lake Texcoco perhaps not to its original splendor, but to a habitat that allows native flora and fauna to thrive... and humans to visit. https://trib.al/omqlOrO

Szczecin Lagoon Eco Island - Poland Size: 1 km diameter Elevation: 0 - 5 m Annual Precipitation: 26 inches Climate: Cfb - Oceanic climate Biome: Temperate broadleaf and mixed forests Bioregion: Baltic Sea & Sarmatic Mixed Forests Bioregion Dredging companies have been digging ship canals and shipping lanes deep into sea beds for hundreds of years. Soil from these has been dumped on land and shorelines. In 2018 UDI was asked by The Weather Makers makers to create an island sanctuary with dredged materials from a marine way widening project. 1.25 kilometres wide, the eco-island has 6 major habitat areas and an array of shorelines, wetlands, freshwater ponds, rookery trees, nest boxes, and a multilayered canopy of deciduous trees and shrubs. A second two-kilometre island is planned to begin creating a series of five estuary sanctuaries from otherwise. The benefits of the island are: Ecological - A protected habitat for threatened and declining species. - Resources for migrating birds in the European Flyway - Isolated, varied, and protected shoreline habitat - Wetlands for freshwater flora and fauna Social - Marine sanctuary offering habitat and recreational wildlife observation - Improved public perception of corporate ethics and intention - Improved perception of national priorities for ecological restoration Economic - restored ecosystem services for fisheries and sports fishing. - a model strategy for repurposing dredged materials for long-term storage. - reduced cost in dredging projects #Uniteddesignersinternational #TheWeatherMakers #EcoIsland #HabitatRestoration #MarineSanctuary #WetlandConservation #WildlifeProtection #DredgingProjects #SustainableDevelopment #EcologicalRestoration #EnvironmentalStewardship #BirdSanctuary #CoastalConservation #EstuaryRestoration #EcosystemServices #Biodiversity #SustainableLandscapes #WildlifeObservation #GreenInfrastructure #ClimateResilience #CorporateResponsibility #ConservationStrategy https://wix.to/wvIczdT

#Cork oak forests are a priceless natural treasure. These unique ecosystems, primarily found in the Mediterranean area, offer numerous environmental benefits: ☑ they absorb CO2, ☑ prevent soil erosion, ☑ support rich biodiversity. The harvesting of cork, done without harming the trees, is an example of #sustainability and #respect for nature. Protecting and valuing cork oak forests means preserving an essential ecological heritage for our planet. #corkdecking #sustainabledecking #decking #yachts #sailingyachts #superyachts #yachtingindustry

Dearadh Zú is really excited to announce we have partnered with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust on the REWILD Carbon programme. As part of our involvement, we will commit to balancing our annual carbon output by contributing to reforesting projects in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil. Here, replanting schemes are restoring precious ecosystems, creating new forest corridors and reconnecting isolated habitats; vital lifelines for a range of species. Our contribution for 2023-2024, will see approximately 44 trees from a wide variety of native species be planted and nurtured in one of the Rewild Carbon planting sites. However, were not stopping there as we will continue to monitor and improve the sustainability of our business, looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint and make positive environmental changes through our day-to-day operations. We want to show that even as a small firm, we can make a positive change and help better the future of our planet for all it's species. #sustainability #design #zoos #architecture #rewildcarbon #Carbon

A hopefull tale from one of the most 'gostoso' (enticing) cities in the world. Amidst the grim numbers on global deforestation and the postponed application of the EU Deforestation Regulation. The beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro has since 1986 been working on 'Refloresta Rio' (Reforest Rio). Since then almost 4000 hectares of land has been reforested. 🍂 helping to combat land erosion (and landslides with heavy rains) 💧 retaining more water ⛱ reducing city temperatures and preventing a 'heat island' 🦋 bringing back biodiversity 🌿 restoring part of the 'mata atlantica' (Atlantic rainforest once covered most of Brazil's coastline and is now reduced to a fraction of its original size) 🌬 capture CO2 ✌ bringing people together in community driven reforestation With growing knowledge about regenerating land and biodiversity lands are managed even better over the years. Replanting with indiginous species and fading out (invasive) exotic species. But all this started with courageous civil servants that initiated an ambitious plan. The problem of the people working on the project being underpaid is a sad note that should be solved as soon as possible. 💶 Do you have examples of initiatives that manage to tackle the social/economic aspects better? 🍀 Any other (city) reforestation projects you want to share? #Powerofnature #Greeningtheearth #Treesforpresident #Hetkanwel https://lnkd.in/e6zum7MC

Over the past several weeks, I have gained a deep understanding of the principles and practices essential for the sustainable management of tropical forest landscapes. The course covered various topics, including forest restoration techniques, the importance of biodiversity, community involvement, and the socio-economic impacts of forest management practices. I learned how to perform cost-benefit analyses to evaluate the potential outcomes of restoration projects, emphasizing the importance of considering both ecological and economic factors to ensure successful and sustainable forest management Thankyou 🙏

“Just let nature take its course, it'll take care of itself” is the WORST restoration advice you can give. This simply doesn’t work for peatlands. Let me tell you why. 👇 Humans have interfered with ecosystems for decades, draining wetlands, digging peat, clearing forests, cultivating land, planting monocultures... The result is that, especially here in Germany, there's hardly any truly untouched nature left. There are only cultivated landscapes. Last week we were in my favourite restored bog, the Venner Moor, and despite the heavy rain there were an incredible number of birch trees growing there. Trees drain the precious water from the peat bogs, so as you know, trees aren't welcome in peat bogs. So the bog will only remain a bog until there are people to restore and look after it. Germany used to be a country rich in bogs, but without our help we are losing these important ecosystems. It's time for us to give back to nature what we have taken from it. Now you know why we scientists prefer to talk about restoration rather than renaturation. On our trip from Canada and Patagonia, I saw TRULY pristine nature. And I'm telling you, it was breathtaking. Goose bumps everywhere. When was the last time you had goose bumps from nature? #wetlands #restoration #nature

“Every square inch of planet earth has ecological significance, even where we live, work, and play. If we landscape these areas with plant function as well as aesthetics in mind, we can create viable habitat where humans are, not just where humans are not. We must rethink the importance of conserving our fellow earthlings and the ecosystems they depend on. In the past we have treated them as if they were optional: enhancements that we like but do not really need. But nature is not something we should preserve just for the enjoyment of future generations; it is something we must preserve so that we have future generations.” https://lnkd.in/evfX2qgx
