The SUD Ventures program kicked off this morning with an online session for our 85 learners from 25 states across the US and 12 different countries. We led with an introduction from Hanna Adeyema and Cynthia Breazeal then went right into icebreakers and what to expect from the upcoming sessions. Learners will attend live online sessions, have access to asynchronous lectures on SUD and innovation, and then arrive at MIT this winter for a five-day in-person Bootcamp. "The opportunities to develop technologies to treat substance use disorder are infinite. Historically, the approach has been centered on neurobiology, focusing predominantly on the brain," says says Brown University Professor Carolina Haass-Koffler. "However, substance use disorder is a complex disorder and lacks measurable biomarkers, which complicates its diagnosis and management. Given the brain's connections with other bodily systems, targeting interventions beyond the central nervous system offers a promising avenue for more effective treatment." Hanna Adeyema, director of MIT Bootcamps, says, "Traditionally, innovation programs in the substance use disorder space focus on entrepreneurship and business courses for researchers and inventors. These courses focus on knowledge, rather than skills and practical application, and omit an important piece of building a business — it takes an entire ecosystem to build a successful startup, particularly in the health care space."
