ACalifornia bill, which passed the state Senate last week and is making its way to the Assembly, would recognize colleges and universities in the state that enroll high numbers of Black students and take intentional steps to better serve them. The bill would establish a formal “Black-Serving Institution” designation for these institutions. Colleges and universities are eligible for the designation if they enroll a student body that’s at least 10 percent Black, or has at least 1,500 Black students, and take various measures to support them, including drafting a Black student success plan (and allocating resources to that plan), fostering a “robust” African American studies program and cocurricular educational activities or affinity centers for Black students. https://lnkd.in/gEjaSPX6 #blackservinginstitutions #blackstudentsuccess #blackstudents #blackexcellence

Jay Veal, CEO of INC Education, is on a mission to close the achievement gap for Black students across the nation. His passion for education led him to create INC Education, a holistic approach to education that goes beyond just tutoring. The organization offers a unique blend of tutoring, mentorship, and technology designed to empower students of color. The need for representation in education is clear. Studies have shown that Black students with Black teachers tend to score higher on standardized tests, have better attendance rates, and are more likely to graduate high school and pursue college. This is because Black teachers often set higher expectations and have a deeper understanding of the cultural backgrounds and experiences of Black students. INC Education boasts a 95% success rate for students of color, with many achieving As and Bs in 55 content areas. The company has impacted over 11,000 students and is still growing. Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) will host a mentoring event, “Your Future Today,” geared toward Black/African American males in grades 6-12. In keeping with the “Equity for All'' focus of the ACPS Strategic Plan, this event will be centered on recognizing and mentoring to the unique needs of Black male youth. Our data reveal that this group of students is overrepresented in disciplinary outcomes, detainments/arrests and academic disparities. By developing strong mentor relationships, some of the challenges that Black male youth face can be mitigated, and the strength of the communities, families and cultures can be drawn upon to bolster their potential for success. https://lnkd.in/eneftz7T
