I really like listening to a sports podcast called The Hoop Collective. If you are a sports fan, and more specifically, a basketball fan, I would recommend it. Anyway, while listening to the pod, one of the guests said something about an NBA team that is not very good and their need to improve. He said: "The road from bad to good goes through average." That thought hit me hard. As a marketer or a leader or an entrepreneur, or whatever describes you, you probably spend a lot of time trying to avoid average. I know I do. But what didn't occur to me is that I shouldn't ignore it, specifically when I am starting something and trying to figure it out. I should embrace it. It shouldn't be my ULTIMATE goal, but it should be A goal on the path to excellence, on the road to good. This is what experimentation is about. It's learning and improving step by step, moving #digitalexperiences from bad to average to good. And that's a path, a journey, and not a light switch. I think that's why people avoid it. They want the light switch. But that's just not how it works. It's just not. So embrace the journey. Travel the road. Don't worry, you'll get where you want to go. #optimizethejourney

Last week, I recorded the first episode of my podcast relaunch with Ted Brady, who managed Matt Fitzpatrick for the best part of 7 years and who has now founded LAIK Sports - a full service player management agency. In this clip, Ted, who has had an amazing career full of highs, was also refreshingly honest about the lows & struggles in his career. Much like business & sales, Ted captures his career highlights so well and simply when he says, 'the highs are winning and the lows are losing'. In those low moments, it seems the winners are the ones who sit in their discomfort and really try and understand how they can get better. Whilst I am an advocate for not beating yourself up after a tough month or quarter, the high performers seem to be able to go deep into self critique and reflection, but as a driving force to get better. Harnessing that balance between holding yourself to high standards but not allowing it to deter your confidence seems to be a skill synonymous with the best in any given field. How do you not let it deter your confidence? I am not entirely sure but I do think it has something to do with input or 'reps'. Doing that much work where it becomes unreasonable not to succeed. These inputs or efforts seem to build a lasting self confidence or self-esteem that can endure a period of stress or poor performance. In Matt's case, he is known for his relentless work ethic and focus on data, which we also cover in the episode. The full episode will be released on March 13th. Despite some initial nerves getting it going again, it's a belter and loved chopping it up with Ted, who gave some incredible insights, but more on that next week.

The biggest news in sports and media right now is Travis and Taylor. The thing we can learn from them is the importance and power of being yourself. Taylor has been exploring the challenges of being yourself through her music for 20 years. Travis Works on being himself through his clothes, cars, and podcast. Given the pressure and publicity of their relationship, if they were faking it at all, it would all collapse and wouldn’t look so fun. But when you are being yourself, and helping the other person do the same, you can do amazing things. What they both teach us is that we should focus on being ourselves and helping others do the same. For leaders in companies, how are you helping your people understand who they are, and how to be more of that? The more your people can be themselves, the better the chances of them finding the solutions you need them to find. Rather than trying to teach people than latest management, productivity, or social media hack, talk to people about who they are and their core values. That will help everyone win like Travis and Taylor. #corevalues
