JJ Redick was the first active NBA player with a weekly podcast in 2016. Original idea was to write a weekly blog. But JJ didn't think he'd have time to write, so tried this "podcast" thing instead... Today he's one of the top podcasters in the world and just launched a new show with Lebron James. But most people will miss these 3 golden lessons from his journey: 1) 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 = 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 JJ didn't have time to write during the season, so he turned that constraint into an opportunity and recorded a podcast instead. A later constraint was the format of the show. JJ couldn't rely on just guest interviews, given busy NBA schedules. Therefore he needed to find a co-host (lesson 3 below) 2) 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 JJ started back in 2016 and kept evolving. → 2016 Starts with Yahoo! Sports (no ownership) → 2017 Switched to the Ringer podcast network (still no ownership) → 2020 Co-founded "The Old Man and the Three" media company (owning his podcast, YouTube channel, newsletter) → 2024 Launched "Mind the Game" podcast with the 🐐 Lebron James. But the groundwork started in 2016 back when no one was listening. Like a great jumper... What gets practiced in private, gets praised in public. 3) 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 JJ's co-host and co-founder is Tommy Alter Tommy Alter. Tommy produced premium shows for HBO and Showtime (including The Shop w/ LBJ). Tommy is plugged into the sports & entertainment world and has been producing media for over a decade. This lets JJ and Tommy record their own episodes without relying on busy NBA player guest schedules. But most importantly, they have great rapport so it keeps it FUN. 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: • Turn constraints into opportunities • Evolve and improve each step of the way • Find great people with complementary skills
