Personal Trainer For Your Mind | Rewire your Brain to Consistently Live in a Powerful State through 1-on-1 Coaching so you can Live with Passion, Deepen your Relationships, and Make More Money

Every single year of my corporate career (without fail) I did 1 thing without an ounce of shame. Use every single day of PTO I had earned. Notice how I said "I had earned" instead of "I was given?" You aren't given PTO. You already earned it. It's a part of your compensation! When managers ridicules their team for taking time off, it's like making fun of them for picking up their paycheck. We all worry so much about what everyone at the office thinks. But 20 years from now, the only people that will remember that you worked late are your kids. As we look back at our lives and careers, one thing will become clear: That no other success can compensate for failure in the home. -David McKay I don't get PTO as an entrepreneur. But time is more valuable than money. So I take more days off than I ever did when I was still being paid to take time off. Money is the thing we want so we can buy more time to do what we love with the people we love. But we can't actually buy time. Time doesn't work like that. When you sacrifice meaning for success, you get neither. How you spend your time is how you show your love. -Richie Norton

The curse of unlimited PTO is that it’s hard to know how much is too much, and how much is too little. Work at the wrong company and they will use this to their advantage: you can take however much you want, but nobody wants to take more than everyone else. Ends up that people work more than before.

When I'm stumped with a decision about using my time, I love asking myself the following: "I'm 90 years old and on my deathbed. If I could return to this moment now, what would I do?" That always ensures I'm doing what I most value. Great post, Mitch Whiting "Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured." Gordon B. Hinckley

Love the companies that promote unlimited PTO and then the managers that ridicule you for taking it.

I had a period of time with "unlimited PTO" which actually meant "Take as much time off as you want as long as you take your computer with you and work while you are there." I remember being on a trip to the beach and checking email/working for 2 hours a night which completely undermined the whole value of the trip. When you take time off, you have to completely unplug.

Back in the last century there was a big booming preacher that had a radio show (WBZ, Boston) on Sunday nights. He would end each show the same way: "I love you madly! Spend your time wisely... It's the only money you have got" - Lovell Diet

Absolutely agree! Taking time off is not just a perk, it's part of your compensation package. Your PTO is earned, not given, and it's essential for your well-being. Managers should support their teams in taking time off, not ridicule them for it. In the grand scheme of things, what truly matters are the moments spent with loved ones, not the extra hours at the office.
