Ninhydrin can be used to identify substances like amino acids, proteins, peptides and vitamin C. When it reacts with these substances, a colour change occurs, such as dark blue or purple. This reaction is very sensitive and can be used to determine the amount of amino acid in samples. -Unwanted discoloration- One challenge that formulators often face when using brightening/lightening agents such as alpha arbutin, vitamin C, or their combinations is unwanted discoloration. I recently experienced this issue while developing a new product and performing a high-temperature stability test. This discoloration typically results from the oxidation of active ingredients, which can be triggered by a variety of factors, including light sensitivity, pH, temperature, or the combination of actives. Here are the steps I take to tackle this problem: 🍃Break down the formulation – I test each active ingredient individually to identify which one is responsible for the discoloration. 🍃Adjust packaging type – If my initial packaging is transparent, I switch to translucent or opaque options to minimize light exposure. 🍃Incorporate antioxidants – I often use a combination of BHT and sodium metabisulfite to stabilize the formulation. If these steps don’t resolve the issue, I consider reformulating with different actives. Sometimes, certain ingredients just don’t cooperate with your base.
