My first time editing a complete book was shadowed by the fact that I should not have had to. See, my client hired a team to help write this book. They spent thousands of dollars on people who were supposed to take the lead and create a work that reflected the author’s thesis, highlighting her trademarked formula and client success stories while maintaining the author’s voice and desired tone. But when they read through the drafts, so much was lost. Their notes and comments were ignored and they were left on deadline with hours of edits yet to be done. That’s when I came on board to clean up and breathe their voice back into the work. I’m so proud of the way we collaborated and of the final product we produced. But at the end of the day, I am frustrated and disappointed in the team who let them down and caused them to hire me. It should not have played out this way. The client’s resources, time and money should have been respected by that team. Ghostwriters and freelance editors need to lead with integrity and remain accountable to their clients. If you don’t feel capable of creating a high-level piece with properly sourced reference material, say no. Be honest and willing to express your limitations as much as you boast about your successes. Last month an email from an editor made me cry. Freelance writing can be a very isolating experience so feedback is always welcome, but I wasn't prepared for this: "The feature is absolutely beautiful – you are such a wonderful writer! I really think this is my favourite that you’ve done for us so far. Huge thanks again, and please get your invoice over to Accounts if you haven’t already." Cue the happy tears! When working solo we can really agonise over the small things: not nabbing that dream contributor for a feature, second-guessing the angle we've chosen or getting insecure over our tone, phrasing or subject knowledge. Those little things loom so large when you don't have a gang of colleagues or an in-person sounding board to check in with. I don't think I'd realised quite the knots I was tied up in over this particular piece until that message hit my inbox. Editors who reply are fantastic, kind feedback is a total bonus, and making sure we get paid on time? That's pure gold. This keeps freelance writers stuck on low rates... You want to increase your rates, but every time you bump it up even a little bit, you get pushback from existing and potential clients. So, you wonder if your writing's good enough. But the culprit here isn't the writing quality. It's the way writers package their services. Most writers sell services by the number of words or articles. However, the top writers don't pitch per word or article, they pitch per project. They pack the writing service with other products and benefits, which helps prospects better visualize the value they bring. This will also help them attract clients who will hire them for multiple content pieces instead of just one. You could also send a per-word vs. package pitch. This anchor pricing strategy will make the benefits of working with you on a per-project basis even clearer.
