In the early stages of a tech startup, monolithic systems often emerge, optimizing for speed and efficiency. While this approach can be effective initially, rapid growth and scaling demands can quickly turn these "Heroic Monoliths" into cumbersome "Distributed Villains". From single repositories and databases to monolithic services and applications, each structure has its advantages and pitfalls. Preparing for scalability with strategies like Domain-Driven Design, modularized code, and decoupled service deployments can mitigate future tech debt. Understanding and addressing these transitions is crucial for sustainable growth and long-term success in software development. #TechEvolution #MonolithicSystems #SoftwareDevelopment #TechDebt #Scalability #DomainDrivenDesign #SoftwareEngineering #TechLeadership https://lnkd.in/gMeepPGR

Software is eating the world, but it's the Developer eXperience that will give startups and organizations a competitive edge. Given the current hyper-fragmentation and complexity in Dev ecosystems, DX engineering has become essential. Relying solely on 10x engineers, both internally and among users/clients, is not sustainable. A fluid DX facilitates faster onboarding for juniors and attracts a wider audience.

Thanks again to Swarmia for sending me a hard copy of the 2nd edition of “Build: Elements of an Effective Software Organization”! One of my favorite things about the book is how opinionated and specific they are about developer productivity, efficiency, and creating happy teams. It’s nice in a world with lots of generic answers to have very actionable and simple things you can just do today. Here’s an example from Pg. 90 with 5 questions you can add to your developer surveys: 1. I feel safe expressing concerns to my team. 2. My team makes frequent improvements based on feedback. 3. My team systematically validates user needs. 4. I have enough uninterrupted time for focus work. 5. It’s simple to make changes to the codebase I work with. How many of these does your team check off? #developers #engineering #surveys #productivity #efficiency #startup #metrics #developerproductivity

As software developers, we often face the dilemma of choosing between 'good' and 'better' design. But have you ever considered the concept of 'worse is better'? In his 1991 paper, "The Rise of 'Worse is Better,'" computer scientist Richard Gabriel argues that in some cases, a design that is simpler and easier to implement (even if it is technically 'worse' in terms of features or efficiency) may ultimately be more successful in the long run. In today's fast-paced, rapidly changing tech industry, the ability to quickly bring a product to market and iterate on it can be crucial to success. The 'worse is better' approach allows for this agility, trade-offs be damned. Of course, this isn't to say that we should always prioritize speed over quality. But it's important to consider all options and weigh the potential trade-offs before making design decisions. For startups, time to get the MVP ready is very important, and hence the "Worse is better" approach can be an edge over more conservative competitors. #softwareengineering #designphilosophy #techindustry #agile #RichardGabriel

Rushed solutions are often chaotic and short-lived. True engineering creates lasting impact.
Let’s get something straight: anyone can rush a pile of code out the door. True engineering prowess means crafting systems that endure, focusing on maintainability, scalability, and simplicity. Simple is hard – it requires deep thought, meticulous planning, and rigorous discipline. Sustainable solutions have to be robust, adaptable, and easy to manage, combining aesthetic beauty, technical performance, and future flexibility. Mastering that complexity is what separates seasoned engineers from mere coders and mission-driven companies from fleeting startups. At the end of the day, the real measure of a team isn’t how quickly you get to market .. it's how long you stay there 💡 #SimpleIsHard #FutureProof #MissionDriven
