Ellie Hoekman recently asked me why I find roles in diversity, equity, and inclusion interesting. Our discussion inspired me to share my why. In my journey through life, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) have emerged as not just principles I advocate for but as cornerstones of my ethos. My path has been shaped significantly by my own experiences, particularly those that tested my resilience and deepened my understanding of what it means to truly empathize with others, especially when they come from walks of life different from my own. Growing up in an environment where conformity was the norm, my coming-out story was met with a lack of understanding from those I held dear. This pivotal moment led to the severing of familial ties, a profound experience of loss, and an indelible mark on my psyche. Yet, it was this very challenge that propelled me into the realm of psychology, where I learned the indomitable power of social influences and the constructs that shape our beliefs and actions. The lesson was clear, being open to new ideas and perspectives is not just an intellectual exercise but an act of courage. It is about challenging our preconceptions and the societal norms that often limit us. It's about recognizing that diversity—in thought, experience, and existence—enriches our collective human experience. Whether it’s differences in race, socioeconomic status, age, or ability, each variance adds a unique component to our society. As I continue to advocate for DEIB, I aim to foster an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. It's about creating spaces where the beauty of our differences is not just acknowledged but celebrated. Through understanding and acceptance, we unlock the potential for a more compassionate, inclusive, and equitable world. Let us commit to keeping an open mind, learning from one another, and appreciating the richness and complexity of the human experience. In doing so, we pave the way for a society where everyone, irrespective of their background, can feel a sense of belonging and respect. To everyone on this journey toward greater inclusivity, your efforts matter. Your willingness to understand and embrace diversity is a beacon of hope for a brighter, more inclusive future. #DiversityAndInclusion #Equity #Belonging #PersonalJourney #DEIB

When I think of the word “hero”, I think of a person with some kind of superpower. Not necessarily defying gravity or stopping time, but possessing a unique ability to change someone’s life in a meaningful way. I think of the many heroes I’ve been blessed enough to encounter in my own life’s journey. And I think of how many of them didn’t even realize their super powers of care, inspiration, and compassion. So, I’d like to recognize a #HiddenHero who made a first-generation college graduate navigating her way through the intimidatingly foreign world of Big Law feel like she belonged. Anne Cappella, thank you for seeing me and trusting my capabilities during a time where all I could see was doubt. In my first year as an associate, you called me and invited me to join you on a new patent case covering technology that I wasn’t familiar with. My panic dissipated as you spoke confidently about my abilities and offered your support each step of the way. You trusted me enough to engage directly with the client and I learned a great deal about navigating the legal practice, particularly as a woman. Thank you for showing me that I deserved a seat at the table. Tag your #hiddenhero in the comments below or share your own post acknowledging your hero! We can all make a difference. It doesn’t take a grand gesture -- just one that comes from the heart. Surely, we’ve all been on the receiving end of this, so let’s pay it forward. Take a few moments out of your day to do something heroic. #thankyouhero #whosyourhero #ADAPTLegal
A hero is someone who does something good. That thing doesn’t have to be large or dramatic. It might be as simple as making sure that everyone in a meeting has room to express an opinion, allowing a colleague a judgment-free space to express fears, or taking the time to provide someone with some career advice. We all have the capability to do these things and all of these things have the ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in our communities. We can all be heroes. You can be a hero. Join us at ADAPT.legal and become part of the change. With mentorship opportunities, DEIA program guides, and ongoing data and insight, we’re empowering communities across the globe. As interculturalists, we recognise that DEIB (Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging) is not just a buzzword, but a fundamental principle driving the global conversation. Nowhere is its importance more pronounced than in Asia, a region characterised by unprecedented diversity and an urgent need for equity and inclusion. I am delighted to be part of the SIETRA conference and to have the opportunity to be part of the discussion on the various issues around DEIB. If you are interested in this topic, you can join the conference in person or via video. https://lnkd.in/ed4zY82M #DEIB #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #Belonging #Asia #GlobalCommunity #Inclusivity #Unity #Collaboration

🌟 Transforming Challenges into Opportunities Across Cultures 🌟 "Life is not as easy as turning the palm of the hand, but with the palm of our hand, we can change our lives for the better." - Unknown In the journey of life, we face complex challenges, especially in today’s diverse and interconnected world. The metaphor of turning the palm of our hand reminds us that while solutions may not come easily or instantly, we hold the power to create positive change through our actions, particularly when we embrace diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). 👐 Empowerment in Our Hands: 1. Embracing Diversity: Our hands symbolize our ability to connect and collaborate across different cultures. By appreciating diverse perspectives, we enrich our understanding and foster innovation. 2. Equity and Inclusion: Just as our hands can offer assistance, we must strive to create environments where everyone has equitable opportunities and feels included. This means actively addressing systemic barriers and ensuring everyone’s voice is heard. 3. Accessibility: With the palm of our hand, we can advocate for accessibility, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of ability, have the resources and opportunities to thrive. This is fundamental to building a truly inclusive society. 4. Creating Belonging: Working across cultures requires us to build spaces where everyone feels a sense of belonging. By valuing each individual’s unique contributions, we strengthen our collective resilience and success. Let’s use our hands to create a world where diversity is celebrated, equity is pursued, inclusion is the norm, and accessibility is guaranteed. Together, we can turn the challenges of our time into opportunities for growth and connection. How are you promoting DEIA in your personal and professional life? Comment and share your stories and let’s learn from each other! Ready to make a difference and bring positivity to others together? Reach out to me to explore how we can collaborate to foster DEIA to Belonging, cultural understanding, and positive intelligence in your organization.
