In a new blog post, MJLST Staffer Audrey Hutchinson analyzes the tension between legal and medical definitions of death, our fear of death and the discomfort in considering that maybe it’s not such a discrete status, and how technological advancements that can prolong both life and the process of dying may raise even more questions. Another must read! Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gT4t57Jr

Nurse Leader | Brain Health & Interventional Psychiatry | Scholar of Unlearning, Moral Leadership & Systems Change | Innovator, Storyteller & Advocate
Does psychiatric hospitalization affect your risk of dying by suicide? During the session "Big Data, AI and Precision Psychiatry: Advancing Prevention and Treatment" at the American Psychiatric Association I realized my experiences as a nurse in NYC psychiatric ERs and hospitals were aligned with new research. A 2024 study in #JAMA reveals that, in most cases*, hospitalization does not make a difference in outcomes for suicidal behavior. What are we doing then? Imagine if hospital treatment for a heart attack had no better outcomes than staying at home. This standard is unacceptable in psychiatry. It was so great to be alongside visionaries last night who are really doing the work to change this reality. Rapid-acting treatments are here. They are safe, and it is our #ethicalimperative to have these treatments paid for and made available in the community and hospital setting. Cheers to all those who I spoke with last night who continue to inspire me, like David Carreon, James Lynch, MD Owen M. Carlene MacMillan, MD Raheem Chaudhry Melissa Broughton Sebastian Barbera Richard Bermudes, M.D. Hailey Gilmore, MPH Anthony Sterns Noah DeGaetano, MD Raghu Kiran Appasani, MD Lauren Arborio Grady Hannah Jimmy Qian and more who are working to change business as usual in psychiatry! 🔗: Check out the 2024 JAMA study, "Estimated Average Treatment Effect of Psychiatric Hospitalization in Patients With Suicidal Behaviors: A Precision Treatment Analysis," here: https://lnkd.in/e4gZEWpC *Note: According to the study, hospitalization has been found to be protective if a suicide attempt occurred within the past 24 hours.
