On January 24th, AAFA staff participated in the Sanofi, “Health Equity Heroes: Advocates Making a Difference” event. The event was an opportunity to recognize the hard work of patient advocacy groups across the U.S. working toward health equity. AAFA presented a poster on our Health Equity Advancement and Leadership (HEAL) program. The HEAL program employs a dual strategy, combining AAFA national leadership with locally tailored community-driven initiatives. Pilot programs are funded and supported in cities like Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, St. Louis, and rural communities throughout Alabama. Preliminary data from the AAFA Michigan Chapter (Detroit HEAL site) reveal promising results. A majority of Detroit HEAL participants self-identify as women (87%), Black or African American (71%), and with an annual household income of under $25,000 (55%). There was a 150% increase in participants consulting pulmonologists, with a 40% reduction in emergency room and unplanned provider visits for asthma. Participants reported enhanced asthma management knowledge and confidence, showing a 50% increase in overall confidence in managing their asthma after 6 months in the program.  #HeathEquityHeroes #PatientAdvocacy #AMillionConversations
