Here are the most fascinating things I learned at Bend Venture Conference (BVC), whether you live in the PNW or not: 1) The Columbia River Gorge is a drone innovation hotspot that arose in a surprising way: a few RC plane and outdoor enthusiasts moved to the region to enjoy the best-on-planet-Earth windsurfing conditions. They built a camera/RC plane device that could be launched from a boat and marketed it to tuna fisherpeople, but they couldn’t afford it. The DOD could, the rest was history. (New curiosity: is there a relationship between outdoor recreation hubs and innovation? Another example is the Wasatch range in Salt Lake City and recent boom in tech activity. Bend is one more!) - thanks Jason Hartmann for teaching me this! 2) There's a future where peanut butter is allergen-free. Hardcore Peanut Butter Spread Co (who won New Economy Track runner-up!) is making that happen. 3) EV vehicle battery recycling is highly dangerous (like angle grinder + highly explosive material dangerous), and takes skilled professionals multiple hours per battery when done manually. Rose City Robotics (who won Early Stage audience favorite!) is doing something about that. 4) Today, Black homeownership rates are similar to where they were when segregation was legal. Home Lending Pal found that Black loan-seekers are 84% more likely to get declined for a home loan compared to any other race. They're addressing this problem with an AI tool that matches lenders to borrowers based on factors outside of race and won the New Economy Track! 5) AI/ML expert Mark Drummond highlighted the limitations of LLMs: they won't be environmentally sustainable and won't bring us to true artificial intelligence - they need too much data, they require too much power, and they aren’t designed to reason. 6) PNW founders need to brag more. That classic PNW passivity is hurting your chances of landing investment and hurting your startup career. (If this sounds like you, Nadya Duke Boone wrote an article for you!)
