During the busy federal season of the fourth quarter, contractors should focus on understanding their customer's preferred acquisition methods and ensuring their solutions align with these preferences. It's crucial to avoid assuming that the importance of your project to the government customer matches your own. Engaging multiple contacts within the customer agency can mitigate the risks of reliance on a single point of contact. Maintaining compliance and attention to detail, even under tight timelines, is essential for success.

WHY CONTRACTORS SHOULD ASSUME NOTHING THIS 4Th QUARTER Welcome to the official start of federal busy season! While this year’s final quarter should be packed with business opportunities, contractors should take nothing for granted as they pursue business. Don’t assume that your customer knows how to buy from you. Substantial anecdotal evidence suggests that buyers have 1-2 preferred ways of doing business and if your solution doesn’t fit with those, they may need some help in executing an acquisition. Contractors should never assume that the project they’re working on is as important to the government customer as it is to them. While priorities may match for large or high-profile acquisitions, companies may find that the contract on which they’re counting is not the most important thing on the mind of their customer. It may take extra work to keep attention on that project so that it does happen this year. Make sure other people in your customer agency are on board with your project. More than one contractor has been burned by the assurance of one point of contact, only to find out too late that no one else supports it or that, if they do, it will still be as large as originally believed. Don’t go “all in” on a project unless you’re sure it will be what you expect. Smart contractors do not cut corners, even when time is tight and their government contact says “don’t worry about it.” Worry. Take the time to execute correctly. Remember that people have a funny way of forgetting their rationale for taking certain actions once the dust has settled. Don’t be left holding the compliance bag. There’s plenty of business remaining this fiscal year, but make sure your company pays attention to each detail so that it is as profitable as you think it can be.

Successfully navigating M&As can be a complex process. You have to be ready to plan ahead and develop a strong, detailed strategy. In this piece, Brian Peirce shares a few of the core factors that buyers consider when targeting companies with set-aside contracts. 1. Backlog: Building confidence and bridging the gap. Backlog provides confidence in a prospective buyer that, at a minimum, there is a foundation with which to work. It also provides runway for a buyer to leverage the existing set-aside work for profits or transition into unrestricted work. 2. Recompete risk & customer relationships: Mitigating risk. Understanding and assessing the timing and potential challenges of recompetes is critical for a smooth transition post-acquisition. A comprehensive risk analysis will look at more than just the timing of recompetes but delves into the relationship with the customer. 3. Prime vs. subcontract work: What is the relationship? Prime work is almost always more attractive than sub-work for buyers. However, subcontract work can still be of great value especially if it leads to strong relationships with large primes. #MandA #MergersAndAcquisitions RiskMitigation
