Great to see Merry Edwards Winery Sauvignon Blanc in Food & Wine's Bottle Service just in time to pick up a few bottles for summer meals! "Made in a richer, riper style, this is a Sauvignon Blanc for Chardonnay lovers, even offering a hint of vanilla-spice from aging in 18% new French oak barrels. Merry Edwards was long known for single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, but the initial 2001 vintage of this wine’s success made it a mainstay for the winery." • Baettig is the exciting project from leading winemaker Francisco Baettig (of Errázuriz fame). Crafting vibrant, site-expressive wines from Chile’s south, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Malleco and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Maule – this is one of the hottest names in South America. They planted just over 15 hectares of various Burgundy clones of Chardonnay (6.4 hectares) and Pinot Noir (nine hectares) in 2013, with one experimental plot even on its own roots. They made their first tiny vintage in 2016, but their first commercial vintage was 2018, released in 2020. From the 2021 vintage, they introduced Cabernet Sauvignon from the Maule. Here they are able to work with old vines – some over 120 years in age – that have been grafted over from País to Cabernet Sauvignon, producing tiny yields of concentrated fruit. Baettig chose the Maule because of its wealth of old vines and granite soils, but also the distinct style of the fruit grown in areas near the coastal range, with bright acidity, good colour, aromatics and tannins that are, in his view, almost Saint-Estèphe in style. #wine #chardonnay #pinotnoir #redwine #Chile #chilewine #maulechile

Twelve Important “New” Canadian Wineries 2023 By David Lawrason Dobbin Estate, Twenty Mile Bench, Ont. This super-premium Niagara winery has an impressive tasting room in a tower that models its lofty aspirations. The Dobbin family purchased the unique vineyard in 2018. With south- and north-facing slopes sloping into a very large pond, the site was geologically varied enough to ping the radar of Niagara consultants Peter Gamble and Ann Sperling. They started with a replanting to Niagara’s core varieties like riesling, chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet franc. But it is not as simple as replanting. They are deep into rootstocks, clones and other viticultural minutiae that build options that can respond to Niagara’s becoming infamous vintage variation and create complexity and texture. And likewise, that is what these wines are all about. Whether masterful riesling, luxe chardonnay, energized pinot noir or the delicious soon-to-be-replaced cabernet blend, the wines are all subtlety, depth, textural grace, richness and elegance. With my scores in the mid-90s for complexity and finesse, registering their success. Tastings in the tower tasting room — set amid classical European gardens overlooking the pond — are by appointment.Website: dobbinestate.com https://lnkd.in/gXRB8V7Z

Is Tempranillo the Future of Australian Fine Wine? 🍇 Australia's winemakers explore new horizons: Top producers are highlighting grape varieties with untapped potential for Australia's premium wine market. Michelle Geber of Château Tanunda sees Australian Chardonnay gaining traction due to the country's consistent vintages, which allow for a diverse range of styles. Other white varieties, including Rhône grapes such as Marsanne and Viognier, are also poised for growth, according to James Lindner of Langmeil Winery. 🍷 Reds hold significant promise: Australia's red wine scene is expanding, with experts pointing to the rising popularity of cool-climate Pinot Noir and sparkling wines from Western Australia. Tim Pelquest-Hunt of Orlando sees Australian Grenache leading the charge with its “powerful yet elegant” profile. Meanwhile, Tempranillo is emerging as a standout, perfectly suited to the country’s hot, dry climate, offering bold flavours and ageing potential. 🌿 Climate change driving innovation: As Australia faces increasing challenges from climate change, winemakers are adapting by focusing on resilient varieties like Tempranillo and exploring less traditional grapes, including Montepulciano and Sangiovese. While innovation is key, producers stress the importance of maintaining strong consumer awareness of Australia’s classic premium wines, especially Shiraz, which has long been the cornerstone of regions like the Barossa Valley. #AustralianWine #Tempranillo #Chardonnay #WineIndustry #SustainableFarming #Winemakers #FineWine #Grenache

Wine labels: A foreign language or a treasure map? 🗺️ Here’s a quick breakdown of common label terms: ⏱️ Vintage: The year the grapes were harvested. Older doesn't always mean better! 🍇 Varietal: The type of grape. Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay... ring any bells? 📍 Appellation: Where the grapes were grown. Think Bordeaux, Napa Valley, or Judean Hills. 🍾 ABV: Alcohol By Volume. Higher doesn't always mean higher quality! 🏞️ Estate Bottled: Means the winery grew the grapes and made the wine on their property. 🤷♂️ Reserve: Can mean... well, almost anything. It's not a regulated term! Did you know what all these meant? What's the most confusing term you've seen on a wine label?

Compare and contrast: Chardonnay Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted and versatile grape varieties in the world. Most famous for producing stellar wines in Burgundy, Chardonnay has spread across the globe to diverse climates and terroirs, its adaptability to different winemaking techniques allowing winemakers to craft a wide range of styles, from crisp and unoaked to rich, buttery wines. Traditionally, European Chardonnays were known for exhibiting a more restrained and terroir-driven style, whilst the so called ‘New World’ wines were more fruit-forward and oak-driven. Some of us will remember tasting too many over-oaked examples from Australia but, today, winemakers across the globe focus on emphasising the expression of a vineyard's unique characteristics, reflecting the soil and climate, using oak and malolactic fermentation more sparingly, and crafting impeccable wines. This makes blind tasting all the more exciting as techniques in the winery are improved and developed with each vintage. We suggest having some fun presenting Domaine Begude Chardonnay from Limoux and Lenton Brae Chardonnay from Margaret River as a blind tasting to friends and family to see if they can tell which is which! #chardonnay #blindtasting #privatecellarwine #independentwinemerchant

Grenache: a hidden gem in the wine world 🍇 Despite being the seventh most planted grape variety globally, Grenache often remains under the radar with consumers. In Europe, the grape is frequently hidden in AOP regulations, and in Australia, it’s commonly blended into GSM wines, making it less visible on labels compared to more popular varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. 🌍 Grenache’s versatility and ability to thrive in hot climates has led to its global expansion. Originating from Spain, Garnacha Tinta is a staple in Rioja, while Grenache Noir dominates southern France. With wines crafted from Grenache Noir, Blanc, and even Gris, regions such as Australia, South Africa, and California are producing standout bottles, offering everything from accessible “quaffers” to age-worthy classics. 🏅 Winemakers now have a unique opportunity to spotlight their Grenache at the Global Grenache Masters competition. Judged by a panel of Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers, the competition recognises the finest examples of this underappreciated grape. Entry submissions are open until Monday, 30 September 2024. #Grenache #GlobalGrenacheMasters #WineIndustry #WineCompetitions #Grapes #Winemaking
