Why I Encouraged My Son Not to Become an Engineer As a Senior Bridge Inspection and Evaluation Manager with over two and half decades of experience, I’ve seen the incredible rewards and significant challenges that come with a career in engineering. While the profession has offered me numerous opportunities, it has also demanded long hours, high stress, and many sacrifices. This reality led me to advise my son against following in my footsteps. Long Hours: Early in my career, enthusiasm outweighed the long hours. Like many entry-level engineers, I often worked beyond the typical 40-hour week. Engineering work, much like legal work, involves billing clients for every hour worked, creating an environment where working more hours is the norm. Project Management Challenges: Climbing the ladder to project management introduces a host of new responsibilities, from acquiring work, negotiating budgets, and staffing, to ensuring timely project delivery, managing KPIs, and keeping clients satisfied. Each of these aspects requires a diverse skill set and the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Never-Ending Responsibility: An engineering career comes with the significant responsibility of ensuring the safety and durability of your designs. If anything goes wrong, you could be held accountable, potentially overshadowing years of good work. This level of accountability has caused many sleepless nights. Compensation Discrepancies: Despite the rigorous education, post-degree work, and multiple tests required to become a licensed professional engineer, compensation often lags behind other professions with similar demands. This pay disparity can be demotivating, especially given the critical nature of engineering work. Conclusion: Engineering is a noble and rewarding profession, but it's also incredibly demanding. I wanted my son to understand the full scope of what an engineering career entails and to choose a path that aligns with his passions and values. For those up to the challenge, engineering can be fulfilling, but it’s not a decision to be taken lightly. #Engineering #CareerAdvice #ProjectManagement #WorkLifeBalance #EngineeringChallenges #CareerChoices
