There is a need to bridge the gap between industry and academia; as academic professionals are apprehensive of the rules, ego of the industry; and industry professionals are apprehensive of the rules, ego of the institutions. Professors of Practice, Adjunct Professors are a good route for industry experts to participate in institution projects. Similar model, roles needs to be built for academic experts to participate in industry projects. Till the apprehension is cleared, there will be no love marriage between industry and academia. Mutually benefitting industry, academia roles are the only way out. Also a number of industry experts are retiring at 50-55 years. They can play a great role of 20 years, in bridging the gap between industry and academia. Academia/Industry should create a beautiful role for these early retired experts. I have interacted with a lot of these retired industry experts and they say academia only wants research papers, research grants out of them. They are not interested in leveraging their expertize for benefit of students. Skill development programs by these early retired industry experts will definitely lead to Innovation, Entrepreneurship, etc.

The Research & Innovation team at BITS Pilani is excited to share a new publication by Prabakaran Saravanan, DANAVATH BALU, Piyush Chandra Verma , Narala Suresh kumar Reddy, SUJITH R published in TRIBOLOGY LETTERS Journal. 🎉 𝐓𝐢𝐭le: Tribological Investigation of Chemically Modified Polytetrafluoroethylene Coating for Hydrogen Valve Application Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) can cause catastrophic failure of stainless steel valve and related components in hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs), reducing reliability, safety and increasing the cost. Here, in this study, the ability of chemically modified polytetrafluoroethylene (CM-PTFE) coatings on steel substrates in reducing the HE susceptibility and, the friction and wear of valve parts, are explored due to its low hydrogen (H2) permeability and excellent solid lubrication. The solid lubrication properties of CM-PTFE-coated steel samples were investigated before and after H2 charging at a pressure of 7 × 105 Pascals. After H2 charging, the samples were subjected to CHNS and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to quantify the percentage of H2 absorption and its effect on crystallinity of the samples, respectively, and interesting insights were obtained from both CHNS and XRD analysis. Furthermore, the effect of H2 charging on uncoated steel discs and CM-PTFE-coated discs were thoroughly investigated by hardness measurements, tribological characterization, wear behavior analysis of discs and pins and chemical elemental mapping. All test results are harmoniously suggesting that the H2 charging indeed softened the material significantly. The developed double function CM-PTFE coatings can minimize H2 permeability and also reduce friction, and wear of the components in HRSs. Patenting made easier at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus Register for the event, if you ever wondered about any of these questions about Intellectual property! 1. Is my research "good enough", "novel enough" "patentable" ? Who will do all that search? 2. Are you scratching your head & are in a dilemma- Should I quickly publish & graduate faster (for PhD students) or wait to file patents. 3. Is patenting going to be a big headache as I might have to learn the patenting laws & jargons to write it. 4. Is it a waste of time & efforts, what if no one wanted my patents later on or what if I don't open a startup, then what's the point? 5. Will it stop me from publications? How long do I need to wait? 6. Is there any reward of patenting first & publishing later? 7. Can I publish first & patent later? 8. Can I file patents in other countries? Who will pay the patenting fee for India & other countries. 9. I love to do basic research, I don't know if our research findings have potential for translation. Can I patent something without current knowledge of its translation? 10. Do faculties or students have any financial benefit (royalty)? 11. I am a PhD do I have any career in patenting firms? 12. Will patenting help in establishing startups? 13. Is faculty the only person who can be listed as an inventor or PhD students/post-docs can/should be listed as inventor? 14. How much do I need to wait to communicate my paper after filing a patent? 15. Is the patent filing helpful to Institute other than benefiting the Faculties? 16. Does patent filing gets you additional points when you are applying for government funding? Bring your questions and find out how you can easily file patents with the help of IPR team & Research & Innovation, BITS Pilani and BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus TBI Society (TBIS) Vijay Singh Department of Biological Sciences, BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad Campus Soumyo Mukherji #bphc #bitspilani #bits

I feel immensely happy that our first patent from BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus has been granted. This work was solely led by my PhD student T Leelasree . who submitted her PhD thesis recently. This patent is also special as we named these new materials after BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus. These new MOFs show visible detection of biogenic amines from protein rich foods such as fish and cheese which helps in testing the freshness of the food. This is especially important and highly relevant to the frozen food industry where the maintenance of cold supply chain is critical. What is even more interesting is that the same set of MOFs have resulted in 4 publications in excellent journals such as J Mater Chem C, ACS Applied Nano Mater, Chemistry of Materials and Sustainable Energy and Fuels. A big thanks to BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus for providing excellent research infrastructure. #sensors #MOFs #Sustainability #Research #Innovation #Materialschemistry #frozenfood #coldchain Research & Innovation, BITS Pilani
Revolutionizing Accessibility and Innovation! 🚀🔧 We are excited to share more details about the groundbreaking patent granted to Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Department of Chemistry, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus-🏆🔖 Patent no: 542203 Title: A MIXED-LINKER FLUORESCENT METALORGANIC FRAMEWORK AND PROCESS FOR PREPARING A SENSOR COMPRISING THE MOF The present invention is about preparing mixed-linker fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF). There is mixed-linker fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) comprising a metal ion coordinated to 3 an organic ligand wherein the organic ligand is biphenyl-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid (bpdc) in combination with 4,4’-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe). This invention helps in visually assessing the freshness of food using the sensor prepared by the process, the sensor is placed in a sealed package containing the food and a visual change in the colour of the sensor indicates a decrease in freshness of the food. Generally, the visual change in the colour of the sensor relates to a progressive increase in amount of biogenic amines produced by the food. The food for which visual monitoring or assessing of freshness is performed is ideally animal-derived proteinaceous food eg. fish, meat, cheese etc. 👩🔧👨🔧 Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal 's commitment to creating an inclusive, accessible future is truly inspiring. Let's celebrate this remarkable invention that has the potential to change lives !!!! #Innovation #Accessibility #Chemistry #BITsPilani #PatentGranted Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani | BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus | Research & Innovation, BITS Pilani| Prof. V Ramgopal Rao | Sanket Goel | Deepak Chitkara | Surender Mohan | Dr. Radhika Vangala| Apurva Vunnava | Arpita Sharma |Vishwajeet Parihar|Praloy Mondal
