Electrical construction companies are vital in residential, commercial, and industrial projects. They handle designing, installing, testing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, which include power systems, fire and security systems, telecommunications, and electronic control systems. This year's electrical construction market is valued at $239.1 billion, and the US hosts over 70,000 firms and 650,000 workers in this sector! Identifying top contractors can be challenging. However, 39 companies appeared on EC&M's Top 50 and ENR's Top 600 lists, generating over $200 million in revenue and setting industry standards for excellence. Companies such as M.C. Dean, Inc., Rosendin, Cupertino Electric, Inc., ArchKey Solutions, and Facility Solutions Group have implemented solid measures to support critical facilities across the U.S.A. amongst some of the most competitive markets.

McKinsey & Company reports that projects in these industries typically take 30% longer to finish than scheduled and are up to 80% over budget, resulting in a loss of over $580 billion in the US economy. On top of these problems, worksite safety is a major concern. According to MMWR, in the US, three crew members dying every 10 minutes from preventable deaths. But there is a solution! “Multiple housing associations found to have failed to repair hundreds of gas and electrical jobs.” “Associations were found to have attended many critical repairs including exposed live cables and leaking boilers and not carry out suitable repairs. On many occasion multiple engineers attended, multiple surveyors and even managers across months and even years. Each time failing to fix the issue leaving residents at risk.” Now, I’m pleased to say the above is made up. And I’m pleased to say I’ve never read anything like this relating to the compliance type areas of housing. But we do unfortunately read a lot of these sort of headlines regarding general repairs and specifically damp & mould. My post about damp & mould the other week got a surprising amount of support. And it got me thinking… Maybe I’m a bit biased as I’m from the M&E / compliance side of things but the fictional scenarios I’ve mentioned above just don’t happen in the M&E / compliance side. Usually with M&E issues there’s a pretty significant risk of people dying so we tend to get stuff done right from day 1. There are numerous things in place right from engineers through to management that ensure this is the case. Overall we deliver a pretty good service in compliance / M&E areas. So, my point? With the whole damp & mould thing are we not running off over there treating it like a whole new problem that needs a bespoke solution when in fact over here in the left hand so to speak we already have entire ways of working and processes to ensure jobs get done right? Is this not a case of we just need to look over the silo wall from repairs into the compliance and M&E silo and say “hey, can we learn from and adopt your ways of working a bit so we get problems sorted much quicker? A bit like you guys do with gas / electrical stuff?” Maybe I’m biased as I say but to me it seems we’re over complicating things a bit… What’s your thoughts peeps?
