The teams hard work is paying off! hats off to Stuart Elliott, Chris Lee, Nick Cook (and me) 💪👍 When we start to look at some of the information being shared across the industry, for example: 'UK Trade Skills Index'... 24400 apprentices needed to qualify every year to meet demand, with a huge percentage being plasterers. 'Google - most searched apprenticeship programs'... Plastering being 6th in the list at a figure of 12200. Sounds great, but compare that to say Electrician, at a figure of 223500, its significantly less. 'Trades People Survey'... in 2022 trades experienced shortfalls across the board, and what was no.1.. Plastering, falling short by 93%. Traditional plastering will always be needed without question, but the struggle is real when it comes to the newer generation taking up the trade... how do we solve this?! a newer, modern method of application, something thats easier to install, a method thats kinder on the body, less tuition time needed to perfect, a more sustainable option... these are the things we're thinking about here at Knauf UK & Ireland. It's great this is over the line, and I take pride in seeing its growth, not just for me but for the industry. #modernmethodsofconstruction #airlessfinish #plastering #qualification #compentancy #level5finish #citb CITB

👷 IUEC Local 4 members are dedicated to ensuring safety in every aspect of their work on elevators, escalators, and other conveyance equipment across eastern Massachusetts, most of New Hampshire, and all of Maine. When we visited their Dorchester, MA headquarters, we spoke with President Doug Cullington, Business Managers, Representatives, and some of their newest apprentices. The resounding theme? #Safety 💬 "To work safe is to think. Think before every move. Every step of every project must be talked about," emphasizes Doug Cullington, President of IUEC Local 4. This focus on safety was echoed by Mary Kate Kelly, one of Local 4’s apprentice Elevator Constructors. She shared with us her daily experiences, and also the proactive steps that she and her team take to avoid hazards and ensure a safe working environment for everyone on the jobsite. ✅ When you choose IUEC-affiliated companies for your construction projects, you’re choosing a team that prioritizes safety, expertise, and dedication. With nearly 1,200 members and organized since 1899, IUEC Local 4 is committed to getting everyone home to their families safely at the end of each day. #elevatorinfo #elevatorindustry #elevatorsafety #elevatortech #elevatormechanic #elevatormodernization #buildingowners #buildingcontractors #IUEC #IUECLocal4 #NEIEP

Really pleased I attended ‘Collaborative Futures: Competence, Capability & Capacity’, hosted by the University College of Estate Management [UCEM] on Wednesday 17 July 2024 in Central London ─ an excellent event, which brought together the Construction Industry Council (CIC), CLC, Technical Apprenticeships Consortium, Supply Chain Sustainability School and the Edge, convened leaders from built environment employers, professional bodies, regulators, training providers, educational institutions and government ─ aimed to share innovative strategies and best practices for educating and upskilling the sector’s workforce to ensure competence, increase capacity and enhance capability and, for me, didn't disappoint and delivered on all points! ─ well done all! ─ great thoughtful presentations from all the excellent speakers but, a few important triggers for me ... 👉 Jon Vanstone, Chair of the Building Safety Regulator’s Industry Competence Committee [ICC] (within the Health and Safety Executive) emphasised the importance of elevating competence in the building industry - highlighting the tragic consequences of inadequate safety standards - underscoring need for a culture of excellence, not just compliance 👉 Dale Sinclair, Chair of the Construction Industry Council (CIC) Digital Forum, discussed the impending paradigm shift in the construction industry, driven by AI 🤔 from my current deep involvement with FutureDotNow and from the reliable data in the robust #Roadmap we at The Institute Of Construction Management are aware there is currently >58% digital illiteracy across all industry in at least 2 of the 20 Essential Digital Skills for work - and, of all the industries, construction languishes at the bottom! 🐘 so, Good Folks! with govt now requiring the construction sector statutory pro dutyholders and all to work digitally from April 2024++ and, that's a tad more than 'basic' skills needed! - there's an elephant in the room (a herd of them even!) isn't there ????? https://lnkd.in/evXpSpVX

Electrician 1st. But also... Co-host of The Renewables Podcast and Apprentice 121 podcast. Owner of Power Sonic Ltd, nationwide solar PV and Battery storage installers. Won some awards....
Lots of talk around Grenfell this last week alongside the results of industries latest efforts collecting stats and views around safe isolation. Much of the solutions are sat in the realms of attitudes, skills and supply chain setup. While we have tenders and PPM programs led largely on price what do we expect? All value engineered out. We now have supply chains and contractors without the workforce or finances to train apprentices. Cuts to time frames, materials and even basics like access equipment and correct application of RAMS. The solutions in my opinion and this is something I have long since repeated are not fast, do not involve the short courses “re training/specialism training” the training sector seems obsessed with. They are found in long term efforts to provide high quality apprenticeships across construction and properly support the employers in delivering that alongside training providers. Its not cheap, its not fast and it doesn’t involve a nice buzz word like CPD. What happened at Grenfell was catastrophic and if we cant have the wisest minds in construction and government break that down and ensure it never happens again faster than a time frame of a decade..... scandalous imho. In the niche of the electrical industry we have had “communities” spring up declaring knowledge and superiority beyond that of the industry of things. This is not that. Indeed some of those people who set agendas within the realms of ethics, rigor, honesty and such were far from those things. Under mining others with ideas, communities and in some cases secretly recording people to get them fired. Same people now marketing and raising a profile on the back of that awful tragedy. It can be argued apprentice 121 is another of those communities doing niche things but ultimately with microscopic impact. That is reality. All be it with the intent of doing it with an element of decency to all. My trust and hope is that “the industry of things does what is needed before it really is to late and in the meantime employers with the capability and opportunity do all they can to train people of the future. To solve these issues requires government and industry led initiatives and a real drive to want to deliver them. Just a view. #construction #grenfell

Technical Director and Corporate Responsibility Lead | Helping architects and developers with timber frame, roof truss and easi-joist® packages.
The construction sector is facing a skills shortage, both lacking the skilled workforce to deliver the new homes planned across the UK and also specific expertise in key areas like sustainability, modern methods of construction and technology. As the UK Government’s Timber in Construction Policy Roadmap identified - the shortage of skills is a barrier to the increased use of structural timber in construction. To attract new talent to the industry and continue to develop our existing workforce it is vital we invest in training. In recognition of this, the Structural Timber Association Ltd recently launched a new Skills Hub and Installer Training Scheme aiming to equip the construction workforce with the skills needed to help deliver on timber's potential to contribute to a more sustainable built environment. Award-winning Industry Advocacy | Strategic Communications | Executive Management | Board Director | Brand & Reputation | Creativity | Storytelling
One critical role that an association like ours at Civil Contractors Federation Victoria - CCF Vic plays is INDUSTRY delivering for INDUSTRY. Civil contractors are under the pump around the clock and under pressure from a broad range of external factors. Which kind of makes it incumbent on us to conceptualise, innovate and deliver solutions to challenges that our members may be too time-poor to tackle. So it is immensely satisfying to see our #CivilTrain team creating change that adds value (my fave definition of innovation!), to deliver a product such as our new Workplace Apprentice Compliance System that advances effective, compliant training delivery at the operations coalface. Not only does it help our contractors and client stakeholders but such developments also drive behaviour change, empowering our trainees and apprentices to complete their qualification to maximum effect. This is indeed an important step forward in our student and employer experience and reinforces our commitment to go beyond compliance to best in class quality outcomes. #problemsolvers Another reason to choose your industry association as your preferred #apprenticeships #training provider. #civiltrain (RTO ID 3704)
INNOVATION ALERT “CCF Vic’s innovative Digital Apprentice/ Supervisor Logbook is a GAME-CHANGER - You guys understand our industry so well! This step-change forward enables the worker and the supervisor to track the progress of their training.” - Shelly Goodwin, Mentor, Women In Construction The early verdict is in on our Digital Logbook at the front end of our new Workplace Apprentice Compliance System (WACS) which CCF Vic has developed for industry. The live tool does away with time-consuming paperwork, helping operations supervisors to accurately log their apprentices’ nominal training hours and maintain reporting compliance, while also driving behaviour change, empowering and supporting the trainee in completing their qualification.
