I had an opportunity to attend CBEMR Training in Lamu conducted on 22nd-30th April 2024. The training was organized by TNC, KFS, MAP, Global Mangrove Alliance These are summaries of what drives successful mangrove restoration and conservation work! In ensuring full ecosystem restoration. It is advisable to consider these factors! 1. Biophysical research Evaluating key parameters such as salinity around plant roots, PH, and soil types, biological and physical stressors • What are the local mangrove stressors? • Is there a presence of natural regeneration? • What changed on the site? • What species are thriving on site and why? • What species or characteristics are missing but should be there? • Are the trees healthy or stressed? Why? • What is the density of flora and fauna inhabiting the site? Key biological/physical examples -Improving hydrology -Possible erosion solutions -Fencing 2. Social Research • What is the local site history? • Does the site have mangrove? • What are the reasons for mangrove loss? • Is there any trials done to restore the site previously? What worked/failed and why? • Are there any signs of natural regenerations? • What are the current mangrove stressors? Key social examples -Developing a terrestrial woodlot -Livelihood group activities such as beekeeping, training and awareness -Patrolling and protection of mangroves 3. Mapping and bringing all the data together Entails demonstration either using Google Earth satellite 4. Monitoring and Evaluation When to monitor? What to monitor? What tools can be used in monitoring? Is it Social or bio-physical monitoring? These best practices ensure good reforestation efforts. #MAP #GMA #TNC Thank you for facilitating all this. Fancy a Chat? Fresh from informative and thought-provoking conversations at Groundswell Agriculture, I’m really pleased to be launching a study aimed at identifying and enhancing skills for nature recovery (as part of broader efforts towards my PhD). This research will investigate the new skills that farmers, land managers, and advisory/extension services need to support nature-based recovery, and address whether the current institutional environment adequately supports skills acquisition and development with the scope required to meet national recovery targets and facilitate ecosystem restoration. As part of this journey, I am conducting a series of exploratory interviews with key stakeholders - So, whether you’re a farmer, land manager, agri-environmental advisor/educator, NGO representative, or a combination of the above - I’d love to hear from you! Roughly 30 - 60 minutes long, the interviews aim to provide a platform to share your understanding and insights on nature recovery, barriers, opportunities, pathways for change, skills needs, and best practice. If interested, do get in touch (Message me directly, or via email - joshuadavis@connect.glos.ac.uk). Help shape training programs, inform future policy, and drive impactful change for nature and farming - one conversation at a time! (FYI - I'll even throw in a gift voucher, what's more to love?) 🌿 #NatureRecovery #SustainableFarming #RegenAg #Rewilding #Restoration #Research #PhD #Academia
