Yes, it's electric. Yes, it's cheating. Yes, I just passed you. Lyft is planning a major restructuring to streamline its bikes and scooters business, while attempting to cut costs. The company has made clear that bikes and scooters are core to its purpose. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of laying off 1% of its workforce. As part of the restructuring, Lyft is streamlining its offerings by eliminating standalone dockless bikes or scooters along with renaming its division to Lyft Urban Solutions. In the broader scheme of things, Lyft manages Citibike in New York and operates similar bikeshare services in multiple U.S. cities. The company also has bikeshare systems in over 50 markets across 16 countries, including London, Madrid, Toronto, and Dubai. Reading between the lines, the restructuring is intended to shift Lyft’s focus away from scooters and towards e-bike rentals. More significantly, this indicates a strategic shift from research and development to a greater focus on sales, operations, and deployment. All of these changes were made to better compete with Uber. Of course, they've also helped Lyft report a profitable quarter for the first time in its history as a public company. It was great to see a team of young technology professionals enthusiastically working under the able guidance of industry veterans. This is an amazing symbiosis of innovative thinking and worldly experience ! Since then, I have been part of trials and tribulations that an early start up with a pondering idea goes through. However, the prime driver for this idea transformation is money !! A start up is always boot strapped and it takes a lot of caution and conviction to raise the money required. Wow, it's been quite the journey since I joined Hyperce as Chief HR Officer six months ago! ❤ Every day has been a learning experience, from leading teams to learning about various marketing strategies. As an HR professional, I must say that I have learned a great deal during my time here. Working with a large team has provided me with ample opportunities to both learn and unlearn various aspects of my role. As per a recent article by Zuha Siddiqui, "Careem introduced the Flexi Ride model in November last year (2023), allowing customers to bid for their preferred price, akin to inDrive’s bid-based model. The service, available only in Pakistan and Egypt, is Careem’s response to the growing popularity of inDrive." Post-Covid, major shifts in macroeconomic indicators impacted consumer behavior in the Pakistani middle-income social strata. Careem, a pre-Covid leader in ride-hailing, didn't adjust accordingly which has proven fatal. In 2021, InDrive emerged with a pricing feature that empowered users with fare negotiation, quickly gaining popularity. Today in 2024, Careem has 373,920 daily active users in Pakistan, whereas InDrive boasts over 2 million users, according to Data.ai. Our group at NUST analyzed Careem for a Marketing Management Semester Class by Dr Nauman Wajid in 2021, recommending a pivot in pricing dynamics and tailored product refinement. The lesson learned is that No product should be seen as Perfect, and Complacency at the Strategic level can be detrimental. Continuous innovation aligned with evolving consumer demand is crucial for longevity in the market.
