The world today faces many significant challenges, across a broad set of dimensions; from societal to political to environmental, to just name a few... And daily we are inundated with troublesome news regarding these challenges. However, I remain an optimist! First, because I believe in the power of science and second because I believe in the power of youth. As you can see below, when these two come together, awesomeness ensues 😀 At Thermo Fisher Scientific we are proud supporters of both.
Help us congratulate the winners of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge! 13-year-old Tina Jin from San Jose, CA won the $25,000 top award for her research on an accessible and scalable water filtration system made from natural materials and common household items. The 30 finalists who competed at the Thermo Fisher JIC, a program of Society for Science, are among the nation’s brightest students—with several, including Tina, collectively accepting more than $100,000 in prizes at an award ceremony in Washington, D.C. Scientific rigor is essential to building trust, combating misinformation, and advancing research that makes a real-world impact. In collaboration with institutions nationwide, Penn Engineering hosts C4R: the Community for Rigor, a multidisciplinary initiative led by Konrad Kording. From research design to statistical analysis, C4R provides free, open educational resources to improve scientific practices at every stage. This collaborative effort shapes a culture of rigor across disciplines, ensuring research remains credible, replicable and impactful. With four educational units already launched and a thriving network of researchers, educators and students, C4R is setting a new standard for scientific excellence. https://bit.ly/3Vfskkn

Since 2012 the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) recognizes the need to improve the ways in which researchers and the products of scholary research are evaluated, distributed, and accessed. This worldwide initiative inlcudes all funders, publishers, professional societies, institutions, and researchers. The Ohio Innovation Exchange - Initiative of the Ohio Department of Higher Education - supports this effort through our promotion of Ohio's scholars, resources, and licensable IP/patent opportunities. 💡 In November 2024, the Independent Science for Development Council (ISDC) finalized its review of the CGIAR 2025-30 Research and Innovation Portfolio. As part of ISDC’s terms of reference, ISDC provided feedback in 2024 on both the draft and final versions of the Portfolio Narrative, the companion document that serves as the roadmap for the portfolio. In addition, ISDC conducted a moderated review of the 13 Science Programs, Accelerators and Asset proposals, using QoR4D as its backbone. ISDC would like to extend its gratitude to everyone who contributed to this crucial process, particularly the Subject Matter Experts for their thorough reviews and dedication. 💻 Learn more about the review process here: https://bit.ly/3ZzTFze 👥 Dr Nompumelelo Obokoh (Pr.Sci.Nat.), Allison Grove Smith, Holger Meinke, David Just, Lesley Torrance, Andrew Ash and Amy R.
