Building a customer-centric product team means you have to balance quantitative data with customer insights. How do you effectively do both?
Ibby recently chatted with Angela at FreeAgent, who shared some valuable insights. Here are some highlights:
📊 Invest in dedicated Product Operations - this bridges the gap with data and supercharges the decisions that product can make.
🔄 Make sure that you've got leaders from multiple teams spearheading big projects - this means you can bring the right teams in when needed.
🧠 Balance quantitative metrics with qualitative insights to get a comprehensive view of what customers are asking for with how the product is performing.
🤖 With AI and new features, focus on solving customer pain points rather than innovating for innovation's sake.
🚀 Create an environment that balances executive decisions with autonomy for ICs to drive innovation - this lets your team experiment faster!!

Planning VS Reality - How can we close the gap?
Here are my takeaways from the fascinating meetup yesterday at Payoneer offices about "Transforming planning into reality":
1. Ensure you understand your company's strategy and purpose (e.g., cost minimization, improving customer satisfaction) and that your plan aligns with them.
2. As a beginner in defining OKRs (objectives and key results), you may find yourself guessing your expected performance. However, with experience, you will become more accurate. It's all part of the learning process.
3. Make room for the unexpected. It will come. :)
* Martin H. Sabag 🎗️shared that he found it useful to define one team member, in rotation, who deals with bug resolution while the others can focus on the original plan.
*Billy Kovalsky 🎗️ shared that he commits to his clients to features that are a third of his plan and leaves two-thirds flexible.
*Tamar Schultz's advice was to stick to your goals, not your plan. She recommended defining and testing hypotheses while staying curious to discover what we don't know.
4. Use technology to help you monitor and gain insights during the year. Dalit Heldenberg showed how she used the "Make" platform to automate the process with AI tools.
5. How can management contribute to success?
*Define a person who prioritizes joint resources and synchronizes the entire company's plans.
* Accept that failure is an option and be patient with it. This approach will encourage employees to push their limits.
Many thanks to the splendid speakers for sharing their insights.

If you are a product leader and data is not well-rooted in the product development process, here is how to begin with low risk:
- Have a framework: There are many frameworks out there, but I've seen the North Star Metric framework being relatively easy to follow. OKRs are good as well, but a lot can go wrong with them.
- Ensure data ownership: Normally, data teams are in charge of this.
- Begin small: Implement the chosen framework in only one team and let that team evolve the process of using data to inform product development.
- Replicate and scale: Replicate the process in more teams and make sure that data ownership is always clear.
In this episode of the Mob Mentality Show, join us as we delve into "The Discovery of Ignorance in Product Development: Time for a Smarter Way to Deliver Customer Value" with our special guest, Gary Cohen 🟦:
https://lnkd.in/ggGMHyfuhttps://lnkd.in/gx2tXEu6
Drawing on his rich experience across diverse sectors—from government agencies to startups—Gary brings a wealth of insight into optimizing product discovery and delivery for true customer impact.
### **Key Topics Explored: The Product Discovery and Delivery Intersection**
Even if a team is familiar with the 80/20 rule (e.g., where 80% of features go unused), how does it determine the right 20% to deliver? Gary shares strategies to tackle this challenge, advocating for a shift from traditional roadmap fixation to embracing dynamic, continuous discovery that keeps customer value at the forefront. Together, we examine the effectiveness of "strict" roadmap discipline (the practice of adhering to set timelines and objectives) and if it becomes a barrier to true innovation and customer value.
We also briefly touch on the FAST framework and its relevance to product discovery, emphasizing how collective discovery through mobbing allows teams to stay closer to evolving customer needs.
### **The Role of GenAI in Modern Product Development**
Is AI is reshaping product discovery? We explore how GenAI can be a collaborative asset for mobs, not only for code development but also for bringing value by uncovering insights into customer behavior and streamlining feature prioritization. We compare "introverted" AI and "extroverted" AI in mob environments and discusses how developing refined AI inquiry skills is key to leveraging AI’s full potential. From training mobs in nuanced prompt engineering to using AI to help drive a more lean delivery, we share ways to maximize AI's impact while maintaining expert human oversight.
### **Unpacking Behavioral Expectations: A Smarter Approach to Product Decisions**
Beyond the technical, we look at the behavioral side of product monitoring, asking, “What responses do we expect from our users?” Gary emphasizes the importance of behavioral prediction in discovery, cautioning against information bias and providing ways to gauge responses to feature experiments in real-time. We highlight the importance of monitoring usage data and what it reveals about customer engagement—whether a feature elicits a “wow” or a mere “meh.”

Ever feel like OKRs are just duct tape over a deeper issue? You’re not alone.
After hearing Radhika Dutt’s provocative talk at PRODUCTIZED, I reflected on how we approach goal-setting.
Her take? Relying on OKRs alone can create vision debt and lead to the “enshittification” of customer experiences. Yes, that’s a real term! Think airline experience and you will immediately get it.
While I agree with much of her perspective, I believe OKRs can work—if they’re aligned with vision, strategy, and long-term thinking. I’ve also witnessed how evolutions can be more effective than revolutions, allowing us to spend time on the impact and not on the process.
In the sketch below, I’ve summarized the “OKR evil circle” and mine and Radhika's different solutions.👇 Check out the comments for Radhika’s talk and my article.
So, are you team keep or ditch OKRs?
