At Blue Peak Strategies, we dearly hold the ethos and pathos that define the Olympic spirit—an ethos of respect, unity, and global camaraderie. We are profoundly dismayed by the recent actions of the Paris International Olympic Committee (IOC) organizers in allowing the portrayal of the Last Supper with drag queens, which was acknowledged only after significant public backlash. This decision not only contradicts the Olympic spirit but has also deeply offended our associates from diverse backgrounds and faiths. We stand with them in condemning this portrayal, which shows a troubling insensitivity to the sacred symbols and traditions that many hold dear. Such actions undermine the very foundations of respect and understanding that should be at the heart of the Olympics and all its associated cultural exhibitions. We urge the organizers to not only address this lapse in judgment but also to take definitive steps to ensure that future exhibitions fully respect and reflect the diverse tapestry of global cultures and beliefs. This book is the first volume to provide a comprehensive account of mega-event planning for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It offers a useful summary of the themes and debates relating to urban planning for the Paris Olympics, based on the results of a research programme (Observatory for Research on Mega-Event) funded by Gustave Eiffel University and Paris Est University and partly carried out with the organisers of the Games and their stakeholders. If you listen to our politicians and those in charge of Olympic sports, it seems that the #Paris2024 #Olympics have succeeded. Without wanting to take any (individual) credit away from our medal winners, who have a lot of it, our performance as a country has been mediocre. We triumphed in the league of the mediocre. It reminds me of many of our politicians in charge of Science and their position concerning our international rankings in Science. We would have to compete with the UK, France, the Netherlands and Italy (between 33 and 60 medals), but we are far from those numbers, just like in science. Both sides justify the situation by throwing the baby out with the bathwater when they are responsible. The reasons are the same in both cases: an inadequate sports (or Science) policy and inadequate funding (both for primary sports and science). Now we are witnessing the "they gave everything"; we have a record of "fourth places," and "we were very unlucky." A permanent déjà vu that happens every four years (in Science, we see it every day). Make appropriate and competent policies (for which we need competent responsibles) and put in the money we need to put in and we will see many more gold medals and perhaps a Spanish Nobel Prize in Science.
