🏙 🏆 Last month, four cities within the Urban Transitions Mission cohort – Lappeenranta, Turku, Lisbon, and Guimaraes – were honored with the prestigious EU Mission Label. This recognition underscores their commitment to achieving climate neutrality goals by 2030, marking a pivotal moment in their net-zero journey. 🌱 The UTM cities have showcased exceptional dedication to sustainable urban development through their robust "Climate City Contracts," developed in collaboration with local stakeholders. Now, with the EU Mission Label, they are positioned to enhance investment strategies and implement transformative projects, accessing crucial funding to accelerate their urban transition. 👏 Let's celebrate the dedication of Lappeenranta, Turku, Lisbon, and Guimaraes in leading the charge towards climate neutrality! The Mission Board for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities marks five years of activities. For the last five years, the Board ensured that the Mission is built and deployed in response to the needs of European cities and their inhabitants. Our message remains loud and clear: climate-neutral cities are healthy, attractive and inclusive cities. They mean better lives for us, our children and grandchildren. The 2024 edition of the NetZeroCitiesEU Mission Conference ‘𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 – 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧’ is starting today in Valencia.   metaCCAZE Project is excited to participate in a peer-to-peer session (P2P) between cities from the different Horizon Europe projects funded under the Cities’ Mission call. Alessandro Paolo Giovannini from AMAT Agenzia Mobilità, Ambiente e Territorio will discuss Milan mobility challenges and how the metaCCAZE project will help leverage them. Many other metaCCAZE cities will participate in the conference. 💡 Have you heard about Ville de Marseille's ''Tree Plan'' climate initiative? The project aims to plant thousands of trees in parks and gardens, around schools, social and cultural centres and sports facilities, as a part of the city’s commitment to reach climate neutrality! 🌳 As green infrastructure is an effective sustainable cooling solution, this project will help cities to with extreme heat, protect the most vulnerable citizens from heatwave deaths by providing shade and cooling benefits, and improve air quality through carbon sequestration. Around 308,000 seedlings, including 8,000 mature trees, have already been identified for planting. The imperative for immediate and comprehensive action to address climate change is undeniable, particularly at the urban level. Within the framework of the European Union's Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission, municipalities are actively crafting action plans encompassing a spectrum of mitigation and adaptation measures leveraging on local specificities in spatial configuration, infrastructure, regulations, governance, and societal behaviors.
