What if designers first asked, is it kind? Design Day is a celebration of the transformative power of design to make our world more beautiful, functional, and meaningful; But every great power comes with great responsibility; Here’s about this year’s theme by International Council of Design : “For International Design Day, we want to go a step further. It is not enough to simply meet the criteria for not being ‘bad’, we want to see a world where design strives to be kind, generous and caring. What if designers first asked, is it kind? What if the measure of design was how well it cared for people and their relationships rather than how profitable it was? The International Design Day theme for 2024, ‘is it kind?’ is about building kindness into design practice.”

Many of us are familiar with the phrases ‘green with envy’ and ‘seeing red’. In Western culture, colour is so entrenched in our perceptions of emotion that just mentioning that, for example, you’re ‘feeling blue’ will immediately clue the other person in to your emotional state. When choosing a colour for furniture, office or otherwise, the psychology of said colours is likely one of the first considerations we will have. “If I use this colour, will it make my employees feel more productive?” We’ve whipped up the below graphic as a quick guide to each colour’s Western association – but it is imperative to remember that much of our response to colour is subjective, and can be influenced by our culture, our background, and our experience. For the full story behind the meaning of colour, have a read of Dams’ June article: https://lnkd.in/dAiUKvbm
