Happening Tomorrow - 🎤 Dr. Tanzil Shafique from The University of Sheffield will give an online lecture for the course Architectural Obsessions on 23rd April 2024, from 4.15 to 6.00 pm on the topic ‘The Socio-pol-ethical Confluence of the Architect: The Idiot, the Activist, and the Dreamer.’ Reflecting on the depoliticization tendencies of the discipline, Tanzil asks how architects can reclaim their political agency. Abstract: The political indetermination of architecture, prevalent today, is perhaps related to our incapacity to differentiate clearly between the diverse aspects that converge in architectural thinking. The architect’s role intrinsically involves different actions, each guided by different principles and, hence, often substantially contradictory forces coming from the techno-economic, the political and the cultural spheres. Following this logic of contradiction and in attempts to avoid it, the discipline of architecture became inconsistent in its statements and weak in its positions since the 1970s. The social agenda driving the paper architecture of the 1960s gave way to architects becoming tools of neoliberal capitalist production. Can the architect reclaim his _socio-pol-ethical stance? I seek to replace Vitruvius's triad of what architecture entails with a triad of how architects should act, through three characters — the Idiot, the Activist and the Dreamer.  #jsaa #jgu #architect #depoliticisation #role #politicalagency 

Urban planning for creating resting places for the #platform_workers #gig_workers in delivery is the key concern of GigWA. I find Zomato workers often waiting for the preparation of their order. Instamart workers are seen waiting in front of the stores. Platform workers wanting to earn more and more are on the run at times when they have neck to neck orders to be delivered and when they have set targets for their deliveries to the customers. This calls for creation public amenities for them and large number of informal workers. Thus, architects in urban planning might think about designs that generate comfort for delivery workers, service providers, tourists, visitors and pilgrims. Jindal School of Art & Architecture

The Bartlett Doctoral Informality Network has released a new book titled 'Urban Informality and the Built Environment,' with Prof. Colin Marx from The Bartlett Development Planning Unit, UCL (DPU) as a co-editor. Joined by co-editors Dr Nikhilesh Sinha (DPU) and Dr Nerea Amorós Elorduy (Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London), the book presents different case studies from multiple geographies, drawing attention to the need for studying urban informality in the Global North and Global South. 💡On the 22nd of March, francesca berni and Irene Bianchi from the CALL - Cities in Action for Learning LAB of the Politecnico di Milano presented the PALIMPSEST project at the 18th AESOP Young Academics Conference (AESOP Young Academics Network). 🚩Their presentation was entitled "Reconnecting with Landscapes in Trouble: Towards Co-existence?“ and explored the vital intersection of landscape transformation and co-agency dynamics within the context of global crises. Fully glazed buildings, while visually striking, often suffer from issues related to heat gain, glare, and energy inefficiency. This research aims to address these challenges by proposing innovative secondary facade systems tailored to the specific context and needs of each building. By integrating elements such as shading devices, thermal insulation, and renewable energy technologies, these solutions seek to optimize the building's performance while maintaining its architectural integrity.
