Recent inspections by Seoul authorities have uncovered alarming levels of toxic substances in products from Shein and Temu. This was including phthalates, formaldehyde, and lead, at levels far exceeding legal limits (by as much as 400x) in all 400 items tested including women’s clothing and children’s clothing, children’s hats and shoes. These chemicals pose significant health risks, such as reproductive issues, cancer, and liver damage. This situation echoes past public health crises, such as the widespread lead poisoning from lead-based paints, which led to regulatory bans due to its severe impact on children's development. Just as governments acted decisively then, it's crucial now to enforce stringent safety standards on global platforms like Shein and Temu to protect consumers worldwide.

How are we still allowing fast fashion brands to get away with horrendous ethical practices and to drive throw away culture? Not only harmful to consumers and the environment we see the severe exploitation and treatment of workers. There is some slight shift with France passing a bill to charge penalties to ultra fast brands but is that enough? Mary Portas has been a champion on the subject for years also which sparked Better Business Act who drive legislation in the UK but more needs to be done. We need a transition towards circular economies, quality over quantity and to support and drive advocacy for ethical brands. Thanks Fashion Revolution also for all the work you do to drive meaningful change in the industry.

There is no cheap and good. Yet, consumers are willing to overlook the substandard safety standards and failure to meet legal requirements. Shein, AliExpress and Temu are going to be racking up huge fortunes at the expense of the health and safety of their consumers. The explosive growth has led to increased scrutiny of their business practices and safety standards, including in the European Union and South Korea, where Seoul officials have been conducting weekly inspections of items sold by online platforms. In the most recent inspection, 144 products from Shein, AliExpress and Temu were tested, and multiple products from all three companies failed to meet legal standards. Shoes from Shein were found to contain significantly high levels of phthalates - chemicals used to make plastics more flexible - with one pair 229 times above the legal limit.

CARCINOGENS AT 3x LEGAL LIMIT FOUND IN WOMEN'S UNDERWEAR ON SHEIN APP: South Korean officials have reported that women’s underwear sold on the app of Chinese brand Shein contained cancer-causing agents at levels three times higher than the legal limit. The findings raise serious questions about Shein imports into the EU where regulations around chemicals in clothing are among the strictest in the world. The revelation was part of a safety examination conducted over a month starting June 11. Tests were carried out on 330 products available on Chinese online retail platforms, including SHEIN as well as Temu, and AliExpress. These findings follow previous investigations into Shein's children's clothing in June which found toxic substances at levels hundreds of times above permitted limits. In some cases, phthalate levels in children's shoes were 428 times the allowed limit. South Korean authorities plan to urge the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and relevant Chinese online platforms to halt the sale of the 20 identified products with safety concerns. Cancer risk… Just one of a number of reasons why I’m not an advocate for SHEIN and those who adopt similar supply chains. Consumers be warned. Halt the sale? :0/ In other industries a ‘product recall’ would be the minimum. Will be interesting to see if SHEIN does so… What happens when all these items go to landfill? :0o #fashion #fastfashion #toxicfashion

Fast Fashion is our weakness & now our Achilles heel. Carcinogens in underwear bought on SHEIN sourced from factories in China. Plastics in textiles is one of the biggest pollutants today. Imagine our future being destroyed by what we wear. It's time, this information is made mainstream. Few understand how damaging to health & environment, plastics are. We need to approach our wearable choices with a conscience. 🔸️is it necessary to buy 🔸️is is safe to wear 🔸️where was it made 🔸️was it ethically manufactured 🔸️what will be the carbon footprint of this piece of clothing Insightful piece

🔍 Alarming Discovery in Fast Fashion: Are We Paying the Price for Cheap Clothes? Recent findings revealed carcinogens in women’s underwear sold on Shein at levels three times the legal limit. 🚨 These harmful chemicals not only increase the risk of cancer but can also cause skin irritation allergic reactions, and disrupt hormonal balance. Prolonged exposure is especially concerning, given that these clothes are in direct contact with the skin. The presence of carcinogens at such high levels would violate international safety standards, such as those established by the European Union’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations, which limit the use of hazardous substances in consumer goods. The fact that these limits were exceeded suggests significant lapses in the quality control processes of the manufacturer. 📌 So, how can technology help?📌 🔗 AI and Blockchain to the Rescue: AI can enhance quality control by detecting harmful chemicals during production, ensuring compliance with safety standards. Blockchain technology can create transparent, immutable records of every step in the supply chain, ensuring that all products meet regulatory requirements. This transparency empowers consumers and fosters greater trust in the industry. Additionally, AI-driven consumer tools can provide personalised information about product safety. In contrast, blockchain-based digital product passports can store all relevant data about a garment’s safety and compliance, accessible to consumers and regulators. This violation of EU safety standards is a stark reminder of the hidden dangers of fast fashion. As consumers, we must be mindful of where our clothes come from and demand better brand safety standards. Let’s push for more transparency and stringent regulations to ensure our health isn’t compromised for the sake of low prices. #FastFashion #Sustainability #ConsumerSafety #FashionIndustry #Shein #TextileSafety #EURegulations #REACH #AI #Blockchain #Innovation #Transparency #HealthFirst

This article discusses how Seoul authorities discovered toxic substances in products from Shein and Temu and AliExpress. The substances found reportedly exceeded safety limits, raising concerns about consumer safety and product quality. The authorities emphasized the importance of stricter regulation and consumer awareness regarding the potential risks associated with buying products from such platforms. Additionally, although not mentioned in the article, carcinogenic substances above the legal limit were also found in SHEIN underwear. Personally, I am concerned about the SHEIN issue, particularly regarding Staphylococcus aureus being found in a lipstick product. Since it’s a product used on the mouth, this raises serious health concerns. As companies grow, they may prioritize quick fixes or use their resources to resolve issues superficially. However, I believe that those which genuinely uphold corporate social responsibility will earn greater respect from society.
