Few are aware of the lack of outcome measurements in the treatment of mental health disorders, and how most therapy exists in a black box, meaning that we have little insight into which interventions are used, their effect and who benefits the most, from what. This makes it difficult to understand the effect of treatment outside of a controlled research setting.
The recent growth in digital mental health has done little to improve treatment efficiency or to shine a light on the black box of therapy. We need to implement new methods if we want to improve both treatment efficiency and treatment outcomes.
At Braive, we strive to set a new standard in mental health care. Our commitment to collaborative research and the integration of cutting-edge digital technologies is reshaping the landscape of mental health treatment.

📉 Over a million people are referred to mental health services each year in the UK. With a typical wait time of over twelve weeks, many individuals face worsening conditions or withdraw from the system, feeling like a burden. This crisis demands immediate attention and innovative solutions.
The current state of mental health services is stretched to breaking point, highlighting a significant gap between the need for support and the resources available. As we navigate this challenging landscape, it’s clear that we must explore new avenues to provide timely and effective assistance.
One promising direction is the integration of AI and digital tools in mental health care. These technologies can offer immediate support, personalised self-care exercises, and valuable insights into patient needs. While they cannot replace human empathy and connection, they can serve as a crucial lifeline for those waiting for traditional therapy.
We need to prioritise mental health and leverage every tool at our disposal to bridge the gap. Let’s advocate for better resources, embrace innovative solutions, and ensure no one feels alone or overlooked in their struggle.

#DYK Worldwide, mental health research receives only $3.7 billion (USD) annually, less than $0.50 per person?
Mental health research and care are critically underfunded. It typically takes 17 years for only a few innovations to be clinically adopted, with mental health advancements often facing even longer delays. Thanks to your generosity, we can continue working towards closing this gap - turning innovations into readily accessible care 💛

In recent years, the mental health field has made significant strides in reducing stigma and increasing access to therapy. But despite more people seeking therapy, our collective mental health hasn't improved:
- Suicide rates have risen by about 30% since 2000 (CDC, 2020)
- Roughly a third of U.S. adults report symptoms of depression or anxiety, three times as many as in 2019 (CDC, 2020)
- About one in 25 adults has a serious mental illness like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia (CDC, 2020)
- As of late 2022, only 31% of U.S. adults considered their mental health “excellent,” down from 43% two decades earlier (JAMA Health Forum, 2023)
- Between 2019 and 2022, the use of mental health services jumped 40% (JAMA Health Forum, 2023)
While increasing accessibility and reducing stigma are important, they don't seem to be enough. As professionals, we have to ask, could it be that our failure to achieve the progress we seek stems from entrenched, flawed perceptions of what mental health truly entails?
Traditional medical models of mental health aren't giving us the answers we need. We need a new approach. One that interrogates our systems and our culture’s approach to mental health, centering love instead of deficit at the core. Therapists play a big part here and we must begin with ourselves.
How do we center love in our practices? How do we reclaim our profession from the mental health industrial complex?
The Radical Love Reset toolkit is a first step toward engaging with these questions. You can download it for free, on my LinkedIn profile. My hope is that it will be a useful tool for you in envisioning a new kind of mental health.

🧠🔬 Dr. Ambreen Ahmad and I discussed the potential of psychedelics in mental health treatment. While there’s growing interest, she emphasised that current research is still in the early stages, with crucial data like dosage and long-term effects yet to be fully understood. It’s a promising development, but we’re still far from unlocking its full potential.
