Litter and its management are an essential part of bird management and ensuring bird welfare. This goes for broilers, turkeys or laying hens kept on litter floors. In an article from the Poultry Extension Collaborative, Bethany Baker-Cook, PhD, Auburn University, discusses the importance of managing litter properly throughout the production cycle. When raising poultry, whether being broilers or layers or breeders; there is a required number of birds to be reared or raised in a unit area of the house. And this is going to be the birds #stocking #density. Correct stocking density is very essential to ensure great performance, great flock uniformity and improving birds welfare. In order to accurately plan for stocking density of your birds, important factors including climate, housing types, available area of the house, targeted birds market weight, ventilation systems, processing and welfare regulations must be considered. Also, it is very important to remember that stocking density is also guided by both feeder and drinker space requirements. Feeder space is the most important space requirement regardless of age. If feeder space requirements are not met, flock uniformity will be impaired as birds will compete for available feed. Drinker space is similarly important as birds must drink water to digest feed and perform other physiological functions. Incorrect stocking density will result into birds to fight for available feed and water. The smaller ones will be pushed away hence can not have a good access to feed and water. Litter and air quality will be impacted. Animal welfare will be compromised due to cannibalism. Performance will be poor and mortalities will increase. #stockingdensity #broilersperformance #broilershealth #broilerswelfare #broilersproduction #profitablefarming

U.S. Federal Court upholds Massachusetts Question 3 Sept 12th,2024 A U.S. federal court has upheld Massachusetts Question 3, which prohibits the sale of pork from hogs born to sows kept in inadequate housing. This law mirrors California’s Proposition 12. The ruling followed an attempt by Triumph Foods, a Missouri meatpacker, to challenge the law, claiming it conflicted with federal rules. However, Judge William Young clarified that Question 3 only restricts the sale of non-compliant pork, leaving meatpackers' operations unaffected. Earlier this year, the judge had struck down a provision that favored in-state processors. The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources has also explained that ground and comminuted pork is not impacted by Question 3. Additionally, they have temporarily paused the enforcement of bans on non-compliant pork shipments through Massachusetts after discussions with the National Pork Producers Council and local businesses. This ruling underscores persistent concerns about animal welfare standards in the pork industry. July 26, 2024/ National Pork Producers Council/ United States. #meat #usmeat #law

In fish farms, different methods are used to slaughter harvested fish. 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 immerses the fish in chilled water, causing cold shock and prolonging consciousness, during which the 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻. Currently, there is insufficient information available to determine the most humane slaughter method applicable to Philippine fish farms. As we work towards this, it is vital to uphold fish welfare throughout all stages of farming—and this includes ethical harvesting that causes the 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 harm to the animals. SEP has started designing poultry facilities for egg production, following modern animal welfare standards and environmental sustainability requirements. The designed barn consists of three technological levels, ensuring complete freedom of movement for the hens on each level. The hens will not be kept in cages but housed in a free-range system, allowing them to move freely within a designated area and access the nests. The nest structure includes a movable floor, an egg collection belt, and a manure collection belt, which helps maintain cleanliness and hygiene. Each level is equipped with air supply vents on the building’s longitudinal facades to ensure optimal ventilation and bird welfare. There are extensions at both ends of the building with auxiliary rooms designed to support technological processes and provide access to all levels. The poultry facility is designed to ensure high production capacity and efficiency while maintaining animal welfare principles and automated processes. This approach guarantees both hen welfare and efficient production, meeting modern standards. #SEP #design #construction

Alternative lighting strategies that allow hens additional feeding opportunities during scotophase, or dark periods, can help improve egg quality and bird welfare. “Most eggshell formation happens during the scotophase when hens are not eating and do not have calcium available in the digestive tract. Thus, during late lay, poor eggshell strength and bone-health issues are common,” said Alexis Clark, graduate student at Clemson University, at the 2024 International Poultry Science Forum. Clark and colleagues found that changing the lighting strategy to include scotophase interruptions for nighttime feeding was an effective way to reduce these problems by giving the birds an opportunity to replenish calcium. The Code establishes the minimum guidelines that farmers are expected to follow. Your insights are crucial for improving the welfare of over 10 million beef cattle annually. Submit your top three concerns about beef cattle welfare - issues could include improving shelter, reducing pain from common procedures, and enhancing living conditions. Remember, the Code only covers on-farm issues; issues related to transport or other areas are not considered. Answers must be polite, less than 14 words, and written in your own words. 🐄 For many years, cows in Sweden have enjoyed the legal right to graze outdoors during the summer. However, in 2023, the Swedish government initiated an investigation to reconsider this requirement. ❌ Despite the clear benefits of grazing for animal welfare, the investigation published a proposal last week recommending the abolition of this grazing law. 👎 Currently, the law mandates that all cattle over six months old, except bulls, must be allowed to graze during the summer. If this right is revoked, it would mean that all cows kept in free-stall housing — which comprise 80% of the cows in Sweden’s dairy industry — would be affected. The government’s final decision on the proposal is still pending. Project 1882 strongly opposes this proposed change and urges the Swedish government not only to preserve the grazing right but also to extend it to include bulls and calves.
