An increase in hospital admissions linked to COVID-19 means Cook County today moved from Low to Medium risk level. In Chicago, an average of 30 people per day are being admitted to the hospital with COVID-19—a 13% increase from last week. “This data confirms what we have been saying: COVID-19 is still with us and continues to spread in the community,” said CDPH Commissioner Dr. Olusimbo (Simbo) Ige. “I urge everyone eligible to get the updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines as it’s the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from potentially severe outcomes due to these viruses.” It’s important to also remember that older adults with underlying conditions are most likely to experience severe outcomes and be hospitalized. The share of the often frail and vulnerable to disease elderly population is growing worldwide as life expectancy increases. Here, we summarize the latest findings on available vaccines for the elderly that can help prevent infectious diseases’ morbidity and mortality, and compare and contrast current vaccination recommendations in Europe and the US.

As #COVID cases in the U.S. surge to their highest levels since January, the FDA has now approved the most recent annual COVID vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer. Recently, COVID-related hospitalizations have occurred at twice the rate as this same time last Summer, with ~600 Americans dying weekly. In Spring 2024, only 1 in 5 adults had received last year's updated COVID #vaccine, creating increased risks for viral transmission amongst the most vulnerable: adults 75 years and older, or those with pre-existing conditions. What I find so interesting is the fact that a couple of papers report on the increased frequency of Covid-19 infection in vaccinated people in the arbitrary two/three week period following vaccination. This includes the famous disappearing Alberta MoH figure showing the huge upswing in Covid-19 infection in the recently inoculated. The import of these findings is hand-waved away by the authors with no attempt to verify or disprove these findings by letting independent third-party researchers access the massive public health data-base in Canada. https://lnkd.in/gQYrxKT5
