Qinling pandas, which diverged 300,000 years ago, occasionally have brown fur due to a mutation in the Bace2 gene. A recent study resequenced 35 giant pandas, revealing the rarity of this trait in a small subset of pandas. In Live Science: https://ow.ly/ppVh50SnGop In PNAS: https://ow.ly/Lqz450SnGor

On #thisDayInScience in 2002, Carl Woese proposed a groundbreaking theory that challenged Darwin’s evolutionary assumptions. He argued that early life evolved through communal horizontal gene transfer, reshaping genomes. Science develops by challenging and refining theories! With the latest release in the Kung Fu Panda movie series, this article is timely. 🐼 The power of genetics is at play with the brown and white pandas getting their brown color due to being homozygous for a missing short sequence of DNA in the Bace2 gene, which is the pigmentation-related gene. The implications could be that the melanosomes are smaller and less abundant in the brown and white pandas compared to the black and white pandas. I think it is safe to say that Po in the movies has a normal Bace2 gene! 🎥 🐼 🥋 Link to Nature write-up and publication article in comment section 👇
