https://lnkd.in/eUFPAnDn Almost any kind of energy storage can be used to help enable renewable energy. Energy storage smooths the differences between electricity generated by natural forces and electricity demanded by people. In this version, high temperature heat is stored in a bed of sand. I expect sand heat storage is more compact per Btu than we can achieve with water because the higher storage temperature results in a higher temperature difference between supply and return heat flows. But it is trickier to combine high-temperature energy storage with heat pumps since they can’t yet reach boiling temperatures, let alone 400C. It will be interesting to see sand batteries operate for a few years at scale and then compare their round-trip efficiency and economics to heat pumps combined with geoexchange (low energy density) and heat pumps combined with water thermal storage (medium energy density). I'm betting the humble water thermal storage will win in most applications. Regardless of technology, we all win as energy storage technologies are refined.
