Renard Series and Preferred Electrical Ratings : A long time back, I used to wonder why Switchgear ratings are so peculiar. Why do we not have a 70A MCCB or a 1800A Breaker? Why do the standards define only limited ratings for Transformers and consider others as non-standard customized? The answer lies in IEC adopting R10 (Renard 10) series of numbers as the standard ratings for Breakers and Transformers. R10 means every next rating is based on 10th root of 10 which comes to a multiplier of 1.25. Following is an example of R10 series for MCCB ratings in Amperes: 100,125, 160, 200,250,315,400,500,630,800,1000. In R10 series, the ratings change by multiple of 10 in 10 iterations. If your base is 100,11th rating would be 1000. R10 series with base 1/10/100 is adopted for ratings of Fuses, Breakers (MCB, MCCB, ACB), Isolators as well as Transformers. It is not applicable for certain other products like Contactors, Relay, MPCB which are calibrated for Motor current and type 1/2 coordination.Motors follow R8 series in ratings with a base of 1.1/11/110 unlike other electrical items.
