Fun fact: This list published by Dato' Azmi Mohd Ali came from my article, the History of the Kuala Lumpur Bar which I wrote for Kuala Lumpur Bar and published by INSAF (Malaysian Bar's journal). I found it at the National Archives together with many other interesting documents regarding our legal profession from the late 1800s up to post World World 2. Interesting piece of history - the listing of advocates & solicitors practising in Federated Malay States, 31st December, 1931. The list contained the names of Yong Shook Lin, A.W. Delamore, E.D. Shearn and W.V.D Skrine, they started the firms that continue to exist till today, in modern Malaysia, Shearn & Delamore, Skrine and Shook Lin & Bok. The most senior non white and non European lawyer was H.H. Abdul Cader. There were also J.G.Cambell, and B. Madge, it triggered my curiosity if Jalan Campbell [Campbell Road] and Jalan Madge [Madge Road] were roads in Kuala Lumpur named after them. There was only one Malay lawyer then, Haji Abdul Wahab Abdel Aziz (later known as Dato Wahab Panglima Bukit Gantang) who later served as Menteri Besar of Perak. 93 years later, there are roughly 23,000 lawyers in Peninisular Malaysia (excluding lawyers who are practising in Sabah & Sarawak). *Note: The listing was uncovered from Malaysia’s National Archives by Foong Cheng Leong, a practising lawyer when he was researching into the history of lawyers in Kuala Lumpur.
