What do you think is Procurement's biggest challenge?
Aside from getting stakeholder buy-in, for me it has to be when dealing with monopoly suppliers.
You know the ones I’m talking about…industries dominated by a single or limited number of suppliers.
Now even though we’re dealing with monopoly suppliers, who quite frankly think they can do what they want…procurement professionals still need to utilise their skills and reduce commercial risk, negotiate favourable terms, and ensure business continuity.
So how do we do that?
Well, here are some effective strategies for dealing with monopoly suppliers:
1. Leverage Buyer Power: Even in a monopolistic market, procurement can still have some power through their collective purchasing volume. Speak to all departments and collaborate your purchasing. Explore opportunities for collaboration with other buyers, forming buying consortiums or group purchasing organizations (GPOs) to increase your bargaining leverage.
2. Foster Supplier Relationships: Build strong, collaborative relationships with monopoly suppliers. This can be crucial. Procurement teams should strive to position their organizations as valued partners, fostering open communication, transparency, and mutual understanding of business goals and challenges.
3. Explore Alternative Solutions: While monopoly suppliers may dominate a specific market, procurement teams should proactively seek alternative solutions or substitutes. This could involve exploring new technologies, product redesign, or vertical integration strategies to reduce reliance on the monopoly supplier.
Knowing how to manage monopoly suppliers and situations requires a strategic mindset, effective negotiation skills, and a willingness to explore unconventional solutions. By employing the above strategies, procurement professionals can reduce risks, get a better ROI, and maintain business continuity, no matter how big a supplier might be.
