Tesla introduced its CyberCab, an autonomous vehicle designed to drive passengers without human intervention, during last week’s “We, Robot” showcase near Los Angeles.
The CyberCab is said to transform urban transportation, making it more efficient, sustainable, and accessible. Powered by Tesla’s full self-driving (FSD) technology, this innovation aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and lower transportation costs.
However, many industry experts highlighted many hurdles that need to be cleared first before the project could become a reality:
✅ Mountain of regulatory hurdles to overcome by 2027
✅ Plenty of bugs to fix in its erroneously named "Full Self-Driving" driver assistance software
✅ Robotaxi's limited size: with just two seats, it's not exactly going to be a practical option for many people
✅ Rearview visibility seems to be nonexistent thanks to the vehicle's trim coming up all the way to the roofline
✅ Odd decision to forgo a physical charging port for the Cybercab, which has to rely on external wireless charging pads presumably integrated into the roadway itself
✅ With an envisioned price tag of only $30,000, it's a wildly ambitious point that should have anybody deeply skeptical at this stage
The CyberCab promises to be a transformational driving force in the EV industry , but the current prototype highlights just how half-baked Tesla's vision for the idea of an autonomous ride-hailing service is.
