In its pursuit of excellence to continue to craft the best #espresso machines in the world, Olympia Express builds on the legacy of the past while adopting modern tools to innovate for the future. ☕ Based in Switzerland, the 95-year-old company is using industry software from the #SiemensXcelerator portfolio to digitally transform the design and production of its renowned machines. This has allowed them to reduce prototyping efforts by 50% and boost productivity by up to 30%, leaving time and resources for new product innovation, market development, and service for its older Cremina machines still in service (some up to 50+ years old). Thomas Schätti, CEO of Olympia Express explains, “When we took over the company, the previous owners had designed in 2D, so the data was very useful to us. The decision to switch to the Siemens Xcelerator software portfolio was driven by our need for precision and efficiency. Solid Edge allows us to create highly accurate 3D models which streamline our production process from design to manufacturing, saving time and resources to be on the top of our game. We remodeled all the parts of the machine in Solid Edge and made new models as well as spare parts. We started afresh and built a complete data engineering set. And since then, we have made various design iterations and improvements to the machines.” While the Olympia Express brand and its Cremina espresso machines have achieved legendary status within the coffee loving community, the company is not content to rest on its name and reputation alone – and has used Solid Edge to help develop Mina, a new portable espresso machine that only needs access to boiling water and fresh grounds to achieve the high-quality beverage wherever they need it. Solid Edge’s 3D modelling tools have enabled the team to efficiently reuse its knowledge and 3D data and create a brand-new product category for the company, launching at #WOCCOPENHAGEN this month. As some who keeps a pretty close eye on developments in our market, new products, new technology and new marketing trends, one thing that I always fall back on is ...... "IS NEW ALWAYS BETTER?" Incremental change to products and features are usually a result of direct feedback from customers and global/local market forces. These generally result in a better overall outcome on the shop floor. However, new products or features for the sake of a catalogue or a nice 20 second video on Youtube usually miss the mark in my opinion. In a crowded market I understand that differentiation is one strategy, but is the technology it actually helping the end-user? After all, that's what it's all about. Is the new $25,000 widget actually improving efficiencies or user-friendliness? Is it making your parts better? Does it help your operators do their job? Does it serve a purpose other than being "new"? 🤔 I'm keen to hear some thoughts. I plugged a few similar ideas and thoughts into AI and this is what Co-Pilot suggested was next for Yawei and Applied Machinery (Yes, I asked for the Robot to be wearing high-vis ⚠) I'm always available to discuss how a tried and tested Yawei machine can help improve efficiencies on your shop floor.
