Valuing others does not have to wait until they leave Last week I was at the funeral of a former colleague. It was a big affair with over 200 people there. I had not seen him for 3 years, but smiled when I thought about some of his traits and stories. Listening to the speeches from his wife and 3 kids made me very emotional and reflective. Why do we always wait until someone is gone or leaving to tell them how much they meant? Well, the reasons are that we: 1. Take people for granted - When someone is around all the time they must know they are appreciated, right? 2. As humans we are more sensitive to loss than gain. It is only when there is a loss that it forces us to reflect. 3. There tends to be more of an emotional response to loss than gain. So how about we think about valuing people more when they are here? Radical right? What if you wrote a eulogy for your partner and shared it with them, a bit creepy I know, but if you wrote it imagining they were leaving, and explained that this is how much they mean to you, it would be hugely valuing. How about we start small and just recognise one thing, a strength of theirs that you really value. How do you value the people that mean the most to you?

Don’t give your inner-critic the freedom to decide who you are. We all have that voice in our heads that tells us we’re not good enough, or showing up wrong, or don’t matter. What would change if you stopped believing that voice? Would it shift how you show up in the world? Would you show more parts of yourself to others? Our inner-critic has the #power to deeply wound us and lead us away from our life’s path. It often targets our gifts and qualities that are unique to us. To control our critic, we must develop a #relationship with it. Get to know that voice. Have you ever asked who your inner-critic reminds you of? Someone from your past? Consider giving it a name so you can recognize it. Instead of ceding your authority to your inner-critic, stand up to it. Question it. Remember, it’s offering you one viewpoint of so many. What else could be true? What’s an alternative perspective? A counterbelief? Without your response, you become an object for this inner abuse. Defend yourself. Learn to distrust that voice and #practice being on your own side. ♥️
